Re: Can i use newspaper as beeding to breed rats?
I think what the group is trying to convey is that you can find cheap bedding locally. Anything you order will double & triple in price due to delivery
Check your local directory yellow pages for feed supply stores. If they sell purina products they can most likely get you the Mazuri 6f rodent feed for a price of 20 to 30 dollars for a 50 pound bag (price is dependent upon vendor).
As for the newspaper... one word.... eeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
use the aspen if you can't find the low dust kiln dried pine.... regular cheapo crap pine bedding is very unhealthy for them (unhealthy lethal). YOu can shred a little bit of paper so Mom has some stuff to build a nest for the babies if you like but don't use it for 100% of the bedding. It would require daily changing to avoid the eww factor & that much messing around with Mom will stress her & the results may be an abandoned or even cannibalized litter. Best to clean prior right before her due date & leave her be for at least a week before a complete change of bedding. Spot cleaning during that week to clean up blood or stillborn is ok.
Re: Can i use newspaper as beeding to breed rats?
Ive used newspaper in the past just for substrate in a tank in the snake room while I was feeding everyone and I couldnt imagine having them on it 24/7. The 30 minutes they were in it was disgusting. I use to get my pine from lowes which was 4 dollars for a large bag of it im not exactly sure on the exact size but my lowes has stopped carrying it and started carrying nothing but cedar. So we go to walmart now and buy the big packs of pine bedding they have on the overstock shelves up high above the pet stuff for 5 dollars a bag. And I feed all my rats dog food im still searching for a reasonable priced rodent block. Im currently talking to zieglar and they are beingvery helpful
