Some people who have alot of snakes in a rack system don't have hides. I think this is mainly because the rack systems are pretty secure, all 3 sides covered. Maybe a breeder with a rack system can chime in on this one.

If you don't have a rack system, then you need hides. Even if you have a rack system, it is my opinion that you'd still want a hide.

i have a rack system but i dont breed. just a 4 slot rack. i have 1 hide for each of the adults (on the cool side), if they wanna be on the warm side, they normally burrow between the 2 or 3 layers or paper towel that i have in the warm side. they dont use the cool hide much. every now and then, when feeding time starts to come around, they end up in the cool side o.O

for the very small ones, i have 2 hides, and im gonna keep them full of crumpled paper until they're a little bigger.

for my snakes, up until about 800 grams they get 2 hides because that is what fits in their tubs. After that, they're generally moved to a bigger tub and get to keep the two hides until they really can't fit anymore.

I keep my snakes in a rack system. But i also have 2 cats that currently have access to the snakes so i want them to be as secure as possible.

if the hide is clear can i spray paint it black then let it dry out, then will it be good for the snake? Or would it be toxic

If I recall correctly I think someone here had a problem spray painting hides. They never lost the fume smell and he ended up not using them. I personally wouldn't use a spray painted hide.

try a nice non toxic black marker and color the outside of the hide.
i dont use hides unless a snake is extremely shy or when starting slow starting babies. im off to make 2 right now

Here's all you need to know about hides:

I use the small kitty litter pan, the plastic flower pot saucers and the plastic cereal bowls that are pictured.
