If it's controlled by a thermostat or at least a rheostat with the correct temps, I don't think anything could happen to it. Also, you will need to make some holes in the sides and lid so the snake can breathe in the tub but this will not effect the humidity.

It would only cost around 10 dollars for a rubbermaid tub at walmart. I have 2 baby's myself that are in the 1-2 month range and they are in a tub the size of a shoebox.

I think you are over thinking how to set up the tub. There are no real rules to it. You don't necessarily need to have a water bowl and hide on both sides. These are just recommendations not rules. As long as the snake has heat, humidity, water, and has something to feel safe in then he is happy. Some of my snakes basically live in garbage, newspaper for bedding and cereal boxes for hides. But hey it works and they love it. Have fun with decorating it and don't worry about the "rules" of how you should do it. And no an under the tank heater will not melt your tub. I have the one by exo-terra and I haven't had any problems with it.

Re: substrate?
yeah your right I seem to be overthinking this a bit, well I guess if you guys say that a tub is that much better perhaps I will try it out.
Thanks for all the input

Re: substrate?
I use paper towels in my tub setups, it makes cleaning a breeze! I also use two simple hides and a smaller waterbowl. Cypress mulch would probably make the humidity to high in a tub.
For a baby up to 1 year old, I put them in 15qt tubs. Over that goes in 32qt tubs.

Mine are 15q and 34q they both fit in my rack its nice to have 2 15q or 1 34q so my baby's ,sub adult and adult fit fine

I use Scent free Aspen in all my tubs and have no humidity probs and when its low i just spray it a little work well for me .
