Just had Roe out for a sec tonight. My fault, when I went to pick her up I got her from behind and she turned around and tagged me :rofl:Barley broke skin, she thinks she's so tough. Just scarred her, I apologized and turned her light off

Oh, GpBp, welcome to the bite club! Behira got me at 3X that size. Still a little baby though.

Yeah, at 150g or so, it's not a big deal.

A couple quick thoughts, as she will get much, much, bigger than that.

    1. I feed at night with the lights off in the tank and mostly in the room. Just enough light so I can see what I am doing. I never handle any of my snakes, certainly hand first (as opposed to hook, etc), at night. They are in hunt mode, or, at the very least, not expecting me to be in there getting them.

    2. If you really just scared her and she tagged you, again, no big deal now. However, start hook training. This will avoid scared bites as well as food response bites. I, or others here, can describe hook training pretty well if you need.

Again, don't handle under feeding circumstances and hook train to avoid feeding or scared bites!

Good luck and sorry you got tagged, but glad Roe is so small.

I don't handle them at all on Thursday (feeding day), and then of course two days after. I'll remember that!
Do you think you could describe hook training a little bit more in depth? I've heard and read a little bit about it, but I don't know that much. I definitely agree I should get on that! She's not too young to start that, is she?
Thanks again :) I almost feel guilty now. Forgive me Roe! And yeah, Roe is still so small. 168g as of last week!

Buy a snake hook. Introduce the hook to Roe so he can smell it, go slow. After he smells it, lightly rub his side with it and then his neck... by now they should be out of "feeding mode" and back to "retreat mode". At this time you can grab him if you are taking him out or you can put your hand in the enclosure to change water, etc.

I have a 3ft snake hook with a soft handle, but that's for Behira at 7FT too. You can get a big one for life, or get an 18-24 inch one for now.

I got a soft handle, because that's actually what I rub Behira with, not the hook.

Basically, when I open her tank, I show her the hook handle and run her sides a few times. Initially, she tenses up, but then relaxes and now realizes that means no food, and I am going to pick her up.

Sometimes, if still somewhat tense, I show her the handle again and let her smell and taste it again. Then one or two more strokes and she's calm as can be.

I read her body language though. Sometimes, 1-2 rubs and she's good to go, other times a few more.

I never pick her up with the hook, however, I will sometimes put the hook between her head and my hand if I am having trouble reading her body language. I always pick her up with my hand after she's nice and calm.
