you definitely need one of those. When you get one, make sure to get a red bulb for it so it emulates night time. Snakes are most active during night and prefer the red light since it makes them feel hidden.

Not at all hun.
I run a uth on my tank, and switch between a red night and blue daytime one.
My temps are right on the mark.
When you say heat pad, do you mean a heating pad, or one of the ones you can stick to the bottom (or side) of your tank?

This link might help you too with any other questions you have, but I'd definitely get a red heat bulb for sure. Just my opinion.
