Everyone has different ways they keep their reptiles. As long as you provide them with the basic necessities, food, clean water, clean properly sized housing, proper temps and humidity, they will thrive.
I have found in my experience that using heat lamps just dries out the enclosure which is not good for ball pythons. Snakes do not need a light source for heat. They do need a proper day/night schedule. Excessive light can also stress out a ball python. Again, you'll hear a lot of differing opinions on this. If you want a heat lamp and you can maintain proper temps and humidity and your snake doesn't seem to be bothered by all that light then use a heat lamp. I personally don't use them because they get too hot, dry out the enclosure, and make me nervous about broken bulbs and melted tanks and fires.
Basically what I am saying is there is no one single "right" way to keep a ball python. There are as many right ways as there are many wrong ways. As long as you give them their basic requirements they will do fine. The trick is giving them what they need in such a way that fits your needs as well. Taste, space, money, number of animals and time will be the determining factors as to how you setup your animal's enclosures. Just be sure to post lots of pics!
