Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
.....on Man vs Wild not 2 minutes ago....a very big BCI.
Now that I have it out there....react.
I personally think it was a horrible choice. I realize it is a survival show, as I watch it pretty often....but to kill a top predator in a community, I disagree with. That was probably a 5+ year old snake, if not 10....to kill something that is semi-rare that far North (Belize), and has survived that long without much/any threat of future predation...I feel it is wrong.
In his other shows he often takes lower animals, rodents, birds, etc....prey animals, not top predators.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
He's killed a half dozen or so snakes, monitors, etc.
I've seen him kill Carpet Pythons, King Snakes, Rat Snakes, Garter Snakes, etc.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
boo-urns
Oh well, it's hunting.
I want to see him take down something a little faster and more elusive.. like making a bow and some arrows, or maybe a spear, to take out wild pigs or deer.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
I suppose that when you are starving and stranded, you got to eat something.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
Yep seen him eat several snakes on several continents. Though watching him eat the basically live snake had to be the worst! He just took off it's head and put it's squirming body in his mouth. WOW!
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
It's a show about survival. He kills/eats what he can.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
He is not surviving....he is making a tv show. Obviously, I place human life above that a snake, but seriously guys....this is for entertainment....sorry but I dont find humans killing top predators for entertainment entertaining. I have seen him kill what I would call "lower" snakes....snakes that have predators such as hawks, eagles, bigger snakes, etc....I don't know of any predator that preys on adult boa constrictors.

Maybe not eagles or anything but Bear does!
All kidding aside, I stopped watching those shows after I saw them kill animals for no reason. Eating plants and fresh zebra kills and eyes from dead sheep I can understand... but I think the show has become more about doing crazy things in order to survive than actually surviving.

Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
Don't worry, karma caught up to him.

I guess that when you make a living lying to people and giving bad advise it tends to do that.
I do not wish Eddy any ill will. I do not want to see anyone hurt. But I do believe that what goes around comes around.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
To bad his show is fake half the time and instead of killing these animals he could just tell you that you could eat that. Take a look at these
YouTube - Bear Grylls is a Fake
YouTube - Man vs. Hotel: Bear Grylled
That other guy is what you should be watching.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
I much prefer survivorman. That guy isn't followed around by a film crew, and actually is just all about hiking through wilderness on his own with limited supplies, and doing it for real.

Survivorman unfortunately went off the air and he is filming a new series on Animal Planet, and will be working on some new survival series and a new book.
Apparently there were more people that wanted the excitement and gross factor in MvW and not enough people that wanted to see real survival methods.
Survivorman's competition with MvW was not the only reason. Actually surviving all the time was taking a harsh toll on his body. It is kind of hard to stay healthy when you really do what you say you are doing.

Yeah, I have always liked Survivor Man better. Bear has a team of camera men a crew with him. The Survivor Man does it all alone. They drop him off and give him X number of days before they come looking for him.

Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
I personally don't enjoy watching him kill reptiles in particular... I remember watching an episode where he killed an alligator by cutting it's throat, It was terrible! lol I was watching with my little cousin (5 years old and also in love with reptiles) and he started crying because of it :( lol but i guess if he's Really starving out in the wild and has no other choice, i would probably do the same thing :(

Thing is, he isn't starving, it isn't real. Watch the videos posted on this thread.
I also agree with the original poster, animals shouldn't be killed for entertainment.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
Bear Grylls is fake, so why kill apex predators? There is absolutely no reason and it's just morally wrong.
Also, when Grylls eats grubs he makes it extra slimy.
When Les Stroud, Survivorman, eats a grub, he says they don't taste so bad.
I hate Bear Grylls, he's a phony.

Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
i sure liked that huge deadly boa dont let the cameraman get too close

Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
They should have made him try to survive injured...oh wait...that never happens in real life!

Agreed. I like watching both...but for very different reasons. I like Survivorman for...survival...I like MvW for watching a dumbass do things that I would never do in the wild/survivor mode....they are far too risky....one big thing he does all the time is jump in the water....no....stay dry. Survival 101.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
In all fairness both shows are for entertainment. They wouldn't be made and aired if they weren't for the networks to make a profit.
I happen to like survivorman more than man vs wild - simply because I think bear grylls is an idiot and I can't stand the way he says some words.
However, they are both just tv shows. I've seen survivor man kill rattle snakes and other predators on his show too. And he doesn't have a camera crew but he can call in his crew to come get him if he thinks he can't go any further - so he doesn't really need to kill to survive either.

Excellent point.
I don't watch either one. I loathe TV.
I think I am always amazed when it comes out that a *reality* show (reality does not exist once you add a camera) is bogus.
TV lies. That is its job. Ads are lies, and shows are simply vehicles for ad placement and nothing more.
Bruce <--- who even thought Crocodile Hunter was a nonsensical snooze-fest.

I hear ya. I used to watch both. My friends and I turned MvW into a drinking game. Every time he did something that would likely get him killed if he did not have stunt coordinators, safety experts, etc, we would drink. Every time he gave good advice we would well drink. We kept a tally.
I am no survival expert, but I do fancy myself a woodsman, and have done some survival stuff in the Corps. I enjoy practicing the primitive skills and passing that along to my children. But anyway. The ratio of stupid stuff to good advice was about ten to one, and that is being generous.
Things got a little better after Eddy was outed for staying in hotels, and having live animals brought on location when they couldn't find any wild ones. They added a disclaimer, and he talks about his crew. But that does not help the twelve year olds that watch and think it is sound advise.
But I guess that is just natural selection taking out those who get their advise from a TV show and do not fact check it.
Anyway. End rant.
Any bets on if the Boa was actually a wild one, or one that they brought out on location?

My problem, and I know I am somewhat alone on this, is not him killing when he does not absolutely have to. Nor do I hold that against Les. But you can guess what my problem is.

No he can't.. from what I understand he doesn't carry a sat. phone.
He didn't come out of..somewhere.. I forget.. earlier this year on the date he was supposed to, and they sent in rescue teams to find him, because they had no idea where he was.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
He has one of those devices that sends out a distress signal. It can be pinpointed by GPS.
They're for sale in the camping stores.
It can still take hours or days for people to come get him.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
Ah that makes sense :D
It would be kind of silly to truly risk your life without that kind of easy-to-get backup plan just for a TV show.

Depending on how many sats it picks up due to conditions, you may only get a four digit grid. But yes, towards the end of the series he did carry one.

It's a TV show people. Why must everyone over analyze everything?
OOOO a mistake! You showed him!

Integrity is a big thing for some of us. Some people also see what that channel is doing now just reflects the degradation of much of society.
On the main page of Disco it used to read. "Your number one source for educational nonfiction TV." Now they seem to cater to the ADD kids. But there are a few shows that still have some educational value.
Much of what they have on now is neither nonfiction, nor educational.
Yeah, you are probably going to read too much into my post.

Never analyze TV. Just take it in.
You work for the networks? :)

When it's an entertainment show? Yes....that's the point. If you think watching surviverman will make you a wilderness expert, you're crazy.

I am confused. So some of you think that it is OK to hunt and kill only when no other food source is available? unless you are a complete vegetarian, you aren't making too much sense.
People hunt for food all the time.... There is nothing wrong with that. Why is this case any different?

Though he's not 100% stranded. He has a camera team follow him. I doubt his crew would like to starve and what not along with him. Wouldn't surprise me if they had food and water.
The American guy on Survivorman (can't remember his name) is stranded.

Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
I saw that last night. I like survivor man better, i would take his advice over bear grylls anyday, anywhere.

I think the point that is being made is that the show is a big bogus ball of snot. He is ten feet from a 7-11. If he wants to munch something for shock value and to up the disgust factor then eat a chicken taquita that has been on the grill for the last 8 hours.
That stuff is seriously NASTY!!!
But to grandstand and kill a wild animal for the sake of ratings is not so cool.
Buddy is NOT starving and is doing this for ratings. As long as he has a camera crew nearby it is for effect only. IMHO that is no different than hopping the fence at a reptile preserve and beating a few blue iguanas with a rock...
Just my 0.02 cents.
Bruce

Yes, he is doing it for ratings.... I guess I don't see it as a bad thing.
Do you feel the same about fishing TV shows where they keep the fish they catch? What about hunting shows? Do you think the same thing there? To me they are all the same. They are entertaining AND educational. Way better then most of the crap on TV now a days, that is for sure.

Least in the hunting and fishing shows there is some educational value. Not so much with MvW.

Teaching you how to survive isn't educational?
I use to watch the outdoor channel a lot. I didn't learn anything. Just a guy sitting in a tree/blind for 20 minutes (of a 30 minute program; yes I know it's actually longer) waiting for an animal to pass by so he can kill it.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
I never really picked up much as far as survival techniques go from MvW.. Like when he went catfish noodling, he made it look like you can put your hands just about anywhere in swamp waters of louisiana and catch a catfish.

He does not teach you how to survive. He teaches you how to kill yourself while in the wild. Everything I have ever learned tells me that 99.99% of what he shows is totally wrong, and only someone with little to no experience in the primitive skills would attempt to follow his advise.
Matter of fact, a couple kids tried using his advise when they got lost in the woods and they almost died.

Wow! this is great information! How bout helping us learn from this and PROVIDE so examples / proof of this.
Where is the story of the kids who tried using his advice when they got lost in the woods and almost died?
Pick an episode. give us a minute by minute breakdown explaining in detail exactly why "99.9%" of it is wrong.
Thanks!

I can’t pull up the news site from my work computer. NMCI blocks a lot of stuff. But I would be more than happy to provide a link when I get home.
Now about the other part of your post. I can’t very well break it down minute by minute at the moment, but lets hit a few quick things where his advise is more likely to kill you than help you. For starters, drinking your own pee, intentionally crossing freezing rivers just because it is quicker, drinking stagnant water when there are dead animals laying next to it, drinking the water from poo (bacteria can kill you in days) and yes he took a large dose of anti-bs as soon as they said “cut”. Etc ad nauseum.

The whole point of the show is to show the extreme things you can do to survive in extreme life threatning situations. Out of the stuff you just listed, what one is inacurate?
For example, the crossing of a freezing river just because it is quicker... So If you had a choice between crossing the freezing river to get to shelter OR certain death from hypothermia if you didn't cross the river, you would just sit and die? Same thing with all the others. If faced with certain death otherwise, what one of the things you listed would you not do?
I guess you just don't get the point of the show. It is to entertain, and to provide information... He is not showing things you would do on a normal camping trip. He is showing basic survival skills that in my honest opinon are not innacurate.

I liked Survivor man more too.... I dont really care for the "shock" value shows as much.
-
Re: Bear Grylls just killed a Boa!!
Just a few things. Les Stroud (Survivorman) is Canadian. Even though he DOES have a crew that can be called in now, in the beginning he took his cameras and did everything on his own. Filming, editing, voice over, etc....he even wrote the intro song and performed it. He is totally real and I like him WAY more than that fraud Bear.

All of it is inaccurate.

If you are so close to dying of hypothermia that you can not walk to a shallow portion of the river, then entering the water and getting all your clothes wet will 0nly kill you faster. If you drink your own pee, you only dehydrate yourself faster, your body is getting rid of it for a reason. If you drink water from poo, you not only take in a lot of bacteria that can kill you, but you also take in a lot of stuff that will only dehydrate you faster. Leaving an area where you can easily build shelter, just to get wet so you have to build shelter, is not the brightest idea in the world.

In my learned opinion (and in the professional opinion of the show’s first survival “expert”), it is inaccurate. If it provided useable accurate information, then I would not be complaining about it.
