Hmm. I hadn't asked about what my BP was, but I am very much a beginner when it comes to snakes. I guess I was mistaken, but I thought one of the reasons for a website like this one was for new people to ask questions. Why don't you point us to some websites that compare normals with morphs and explain patterns, shading, etc.? Do you know of any?

:) Chill out a bit... they're newbies and they're excited. I'm sure you had a time when you had an unusual looking normal and thought there might be a chance it was more. :)

If there's a problem at all with multiple askings of the same question, it's that these new people are so excited/worried about something that they don't bother to do a search for the thing they're wanting to know. Instead, they just post a new thread which is much faster.

As to the websites to ID morphs... if there isn't already a thread with that info, I'll go ahead and make one. :)

NEVER expect to get a morph at a Petco, Petsmart or Petland (include other mom and pop shops here, unless otherwise acknowledged by other hobbyists). I've spend a few thousand dollars on my morphs and I don't regret it, but please don't be jipped by anyone telling you your getting a Pastel or Lesser at a Petco. They don't carry morphs they only carry crateload imports with diseases.

While some questions are asked over and over again (whether it is “is my BP a morph?” or “why is my BP is not eating?”) you have to remember that for the person asking, it is the first time that they ask the question.

Yes people could do some research (and some do) however some people need that want that 1 on 1 attention and guidance from someone that is more experienced and there is nothing wrong with that, that is why forums are here for to answer questions.

As for anyone who would be tired of answering the same question again and again, there is a very simple solution: do not answer the post, you don't have to if you don't want to. ;)

I find it so upsetting when there are constant "if i hear ____ question again" blah blah blah.. there was a time when i too came on here in the beginning hoping perhaps i picked up something "Special" and besides how do you think the first subtle morphs were identified "hey you think this looks weird".. turning into a mojave, yellow belly, woma, pastel exc.. not every morph is an in your face morph they are today. Obviously now we know what morph is what but im talking about in the beginning for some of them. kwim?? The only way to know is to ask.. it would be sad if people couldnt come here and post asking questions when they too want to know and learn. Cut them some slack.. the only stupid question/topic is the one not posted. Skip it if your so annoyed, bothered, inconvenienced by it

This is a forum, were here to answer questions, however annoying they get( Especially when repeated...) When you think about it almost every question has been answered, and its as simple as using the search tab to find them. If everyone did that then the forum would go dead other than people helping with setups.

Re: to anyone who thinks they have a morph
I don't mind the "is my snake a morph" threads. There are times when I look and think.... *hmmmmmm*... or someone notes a marking that is seen in the more subtle morphs.

First response is to say "hot normal"... but I try to look closely and genuinely critique.

I was CONVINCED my first BP was a yellow belly... and then my het orange... I was certain he was a yellow belly too. :)

But it got me looking at snakes, learning about genetics, and sharpened my eye when people would point out the differences, which at the time I had trouble seeing, but now are glaringly obvious.

All part of the learning curve. :)

    Bruce

PS: An acquaintance of mine got a Velvet at a pet store. Interesting snake, emailed BHB and Mark Mandic... then asked the pet store to find out it came in as a trade. If she'd never taken the time to ask she would have just figured she had a nice hypermelanistic snake.

I personally enjoy look at other peoples animals (normals included). Although, I do prefer the voting tool when someone is asking if their animal is a morph. I often don't have time to make posts on most threads, but I have time to vote. :)

Either way, I agree with most posters on this thread. Let people post their animals and learn. Perhaps, it will get them interested in genetics.

Seeing as most post titles are self explanatory, if you don't like a specific type of thread, don't click.

I have to admit, I wonder about my snake..if he is a normal or not, since he came from a rescue. I don't know enough to know how to tell. He looks like a normal to my newby eye, but his dark color looks black, or at least very very dark to me. I am going to check out those links to the morph sites/pages to try to learn what is normal and what is not.

Precisely. It could be worse... they could be listening to the chain pet store people or the idiot who tortures his animals but thinks he's 'taking good care' of them. :D The fact that people, even long time keepers, ask questions is how this hobby progresses! If no one questioned, then we'd still be using ancient methods and probably loosing animals quite a bit.

    Keep them questions rollin!

Like I'm pretty sure you didn't get an expensive morph from Petco and it slipped through those breeders fingers haha... but I just say "hey it's a normal and it's pretty looking" because I'm mature/intelligent enough to not make a beginner feel like crap!!!

Re: to anyone who thinks they have a morph
I for one am not 100% perfect in the ID of ball python morphs. I don't think anybody can lay claim to that. Think about what everybody told the first person who thought they had a new morph and showed the picture of a yellow belly before it was a well known morph, or the specter, fire, genetic banded, Genetic Granite... It took me some searching before I could ID some of these and others particularly the specter still eludes me. If I got something that hinted at what people have said a specter looked like I would definately need to get a second opinion on it from someone much more familiar with it. I do remember when I started I had trouble telling some pastels from normals. (Why is this nice bright colored snake a normal, but this dull one a pastel? Didn't realize it was all in the green eyes and the fact that different kinds of pastels exist from Lemon to blond.) I like to look at these new member questions in a slightly different light, when we stop seeing the new member questions come up then we should be concerned over the future of our hobby. Without the new blood coming in our hobby will loose traction and start to contract. Kinda like other things going on right now! :)

Re: to anyone who thinks they have a morph
It does happen very rarely that a "normal" does turn out to be a morph. The sulfur ball is one example. The original was bought at a pet shop. I also could see earth-tone snake morphs selling from a pet store; for example a yellow belly. It is very rare, but it is a possibility.

Personally, I don't mind when newbie’s ask if their normal is a morph. I don’t mind to check them out and make a determination.

To the OP, don't be such a jerk. You were a noob not that long ago. If you're all so knowledgable, then stop coming here, since you obviously know everything, and have no need to ask any questions.

To Noobs reading this, not everyone here is such a idiot. Most are here to help and encourage.

All those "stupid noob" questions are essential to learning. People who ask "Is my snake a morph?" are genuinely excited to discover all the different types of ball python that are out there. I myself got my first ball python without knowing there was anything out there other than albinos and normals. When you start seeing yellowbellies, and pastels, and cinnamons, and all the other more subtle morphs, you CANNOT tell what makes them a morph, while yours is a normal. When a picture is posted of a normal asking if it's a pastel... telling them that the eyes should be green, that the yellow should be brighter, that there should be blushing.. that's all teaching them about pastels. THAT'S what the site should be about, teaching people about ball pythons, how to take care of them, how to pick out a good healthy speciman, and how very cool they ALL are.

If anyone is tired of answering the same question again, easy fix... DON'T answer it. This forum is chock-a-block full of people who LOVE to answer questions. Step back and enjoy the other threads, and later on you might want to answer a question yourself.
