The Crystal Ball
Robin (rabernet) was kind enough to show me this link today. Normally we don't allow links to other forums but since these pictures and this information is unavailable by any other means, it's being allowed. Congratulations to the breeder, Mr. Tom Baker, for producing more Crystal Balls this year as well as a Paradox Crystal. His Crystal Ball from last year remains one of my most drooled over BP's.
If anyone is aware of a website for Mr. Baker and his collection please let me know so I can update the link.

Re: The Crystal Ball
I thought this was exactly what Brad got edited for with his spider pied thread which then launched the entire "links to other forums debate"?
Just asking, but so is this now an "exception" to the rule that we're just learning about? Maybe we can get some better clarification on exactly "when" posting links to other forums is acceptable? Breeder without a website, etc?
Why not just post links to the individual pics instead of linking to the thread on a forum? Surely linking to pictures on another sites gallery isn't an issue? Or is that a problem too? Maybe that would make it a little easier on everyone?
Sorry for being such a PIA, I just want to make sure I'm "crystal" clear on how this linking rule works so that I don't get myself into any trouble if I find something cool on the net that I want to share with the community.

Re: The Crystal Ball
Thank you Joanna (and Smulkin!)
I can't believe he did it again! Here's my question for the experienced breeders here who understand genetics.
So, this is a mojave x "special" normal. So, say he decides to sell one of these babies.
How would that buyer re-produce it? Because isn't is considered a "designer" morph as a cross between a mojave x "special" female? How does that work?
I LOVE how it matures - just Wow! and surprisingly, because I'm not a big paradox fan, I like that little paradox Crystal ball!

Most site have hotlinking protection turned on to prevent that - though it was assumed, I am kind of floored KS doesnt.
For example if you tried to view
http://www.ball-pythons.net/gallery/...ader_mar05.jpg
while not logged in - you would be unable.
Also thanks Robin for contacting us about how to best approach the situation!

I'm with Adam on this one...so if you want to link to another forum, get permission from a mod first?
Or maybe someone call Tom and beg him to post his pictures here? =) Tom's pictures have spawned a big thread on RDR's forums as well...
Back on topic, I thought the Crystal was a 2005 female? So like...where's this clutch coming from? Some super mojave/freak thing?
*edit* Actually, the thread on RDR is damn entertaining.

Re: The Crystal Ball
What a super neat snake! You can really see the Mojave in it :D

Not to distract from this forum(as it's my fave) but that thread is a good read...well parts of it at least!
-
Re: The Crystal Ball
The main impetus behind that general policy is that there have been instances in the past where folks would wind up coming back to talk smack about the other forums or posters within external threads - or vice versa.
Previously when this occured it led to much drama, fallout and feelings of ill-will between forums/communities/staff. Of lesser concern is the potential for community bleed-off, but the hard work everyone at every level puts into this site makes me hesitant to beleive that is much to be overly concerned about.
We're not here to stifle defvelopment, discussion or otherwise stomp on anyone's freedom. We do like to minimize the potential for conflict, e-drama and any other possible avenues of bad blood so we can keep our collective attentions on-topic and not have to worry about any sort of ad-hominem attacks developing. It's a sticky wicket and one that is under discussion.

Actually Cassandra nobody got permission from a Mod...I'm a Mod and I posted it after asking for permission and advice from Admin.
There is a 2005 Crystal female. This clutch isn't from her. If you read the write-up (which was why I asked to post the link instead of just linking to photo's...to avoid this confusion and generate talk about the genetics involved...as well as not knowing I could hotlink to their photo's) you'll note these are 2006 babies from the same parents that produce the single female last year.

Re: The Crystal Ball
OMG!!! that just freking cool, I know that the cristal has mojave in it, butr what is the other morph used to produce it?
-
Re: The Crystal Ball
It started with me IMing Joanna because I know how much she loves the Crystal Ball and asked if she'd seen the newest pictures. As we were gushing over them, I said it's too bad he doesn't have a website, because if I start a topic on the Crystal ball, I can't really link to pictures I've seen (I didn't know how to get to the gallery link that Adam linked to).
Jo then offered to ask Matt about it and offered to start the thread.
I knew from Brad's thread earlier that I shouldn't post the link, I just didn't know HOW to get the pictures up here AND give Tom his due and merely asked for suggestions.

Tom states that it's a "special" normal female. He's keeping it close the vest right now, as he should!
-
Re: The Crystal Ball
Whatever is involved it's very cool that using the same pairing he produced even more of them this year. I'm always confused about what causes this "paradox" thing too. Then there's the ones he calls the "special" Mojaves. All and all a very interesting bunch of snakes coming out of this pairing of his.

Hey, that's cool ... I'm just trying to understand ... So what is the current state of the "linking to other forums" rule? Is it only if there are pictures to be seen and they aren't posted else where, like a breeder website, etc? Or is it only with permission from the admins/mods? Or is it only allowed to be done by admins/mods? Or was just this a one time thing?
Wanting to know what the rules are is a good thing, right? :D

Re: The Crystal Ball
if the post you are linking to is not to complain but to shine light... wouldn't that be okay?
*steps into the confused box beside adam*

The subject is currently under discussion. An update/clarification to the policy should be announced in the next day or so.

Re: The Crystal Ball
Anyone think the crystal mom is another clear belly het for the platy complex? In this scenario the crystal would be another super of this theoretical allele group like leucistic, platy, super phantom, and 44. Nice to see the spectrum of colors including these near but not completely white ones. So is the mocha in this group too? I sure didn't expect the Vin Russo to be compatible but now that we see it is I'm wondering about fire - or has someone tried that already? We know the ivory is separate so maybe the fire will stay a 3rd separate white snake type (platy complex, ivory, fire). Am I missing any?

Re: The Crystal Ball
....the crystal ball looks like what I would picture a cross between a mojave and a paragon-like ball....
LMAO....but all GUESSES are just that...guesses....it will be interesting to find out what is really going on with that girl!
My guess is that she looks like a pretty normal and the only reason she is 'special' is because she produced crystals when bred to the mojave.....has anyone considered the daddy mojave's genetics ;) It takes two to tango!
-
Re: The Crystal Ball
A ball named after moi?????...really..you shouldn't have..:P....it's amazing!!!
-
Re: The Crystal Ball
the mom can be like the yellow belly, the yellow belly people think that was only a good looking normal untill the ivory came out
-
Re: The Crystal Ball
so i am wondering, has anyone ever found out the answer to the "special female" ?, i know this is an old post but i just saw the pics and was floored.
-
Re: The Crystal Ball

Someone should probably note ... those animals and photgraph are courtesy of Tom Baker/Python Dreams.
I'm sort of a stickler for following copyright law. ;)

Information about the crystal project isn't public domain yet ... if I did know, it would be highly disrespectful to the owners of the crystal projects to give out that information. ;)

Stop!! LOL! No body say anything else about that...
Well lets see......There was a special female. And a Mojave. bredtogether and you got a crystal? That would mean that both of the parents are carrying the genes....unless...the mom is the super form?!?!!!!
to awnser the other question...
A mojave is a co-dom trait . It is 'het' for blue Eyed lucy. Mojave x normal = mojaves, mojave x mojave = BEL.
