    I did it again.....
Well as most of you know, Dottie passed away last night. Cant help thinking maybe i had something to do with it if i had took her to the vet during her 9 month fast. But she has always fasted in the winters but the past winter she ate through winter so i thought maybe she was fasting during summer. I kept her husbandry on point and she seemed fine and at her last weigh in was 1700ish grams. No signs or anything. Came home to find her curled up in the back in her normal sleep position but dead. No weird coloring, no damage or anything. She looked fine. But again, cant help but think maybe i could have done something.

But anyways, with all that said, I ended up putting a down payment on a USCBB Biak X Oshy/Biak red neo. It is 3 months 8 days old and hopefully in a couple weeks, it will be here. We need to make sure the FedEx hub that it will go through isnt affected by the hurricane. Here are some pics the breeder sent to me when we were talking.

    Sauzo,

Beautiful new addition. I can't wait to hear about his/her growth and happiness for the many years you will have him/her.

Please don't beat yourself up over Dottie. It's very sad, but knowing you from the forum, I seriously doubt there was anything you did, or failed to do, that caused her death. It sounds like a freak thing.

Life is strange sometimes. My kidney's started failing when I was 23 and I almost died. Made it to the hospital literally 2 hours before I would have dropped dead. Who worries about stuff like that at 23, or at 5 for a BP?

All you can do is continue to do your best and keep moving forward. I know you will give this new addition a great home and many years of happiness. The best way you can remember Dottie is by giving all your creatures, new and old, the love and great life you gave her.

    Keep chugging.

Thanks. Yeah i know she got a good 5 years of life from me. She had a really start at life as she was a Petsmart animal and we know they get from farms and she was having it rough at the store too. So i do take some happiness in knowing she did have it good for awhile.

And yeah, i know it probably was just a freak thing but cant but think.

Anyways, looking forward to this new little guy.

Awesome looking little neo. Have you given him a name yet or will you do that once he arrives?

As dakski said, I doubt there was much you could have done differently for Dottie...some issues just don't show up & it would really help if they'd tell us how they're
feeling. I know I've taken snakes to the vet that I suspected were sick & the vet found nothing...then some time later the snake passed away. It's just so hard to tell
and even if you think there's a problem, what can you do?

All the best with your new stunner...with a few weeks to go, hopefully she won't have to come by row boat? ;)

Losing a beloved pet so suddenly and without signs of illness is shocking. You may blame yourself, wondering the what ifs...

Sometimes, life works like that. One day, the brain just push the 'off' button and there is nothing you could have done to stop it. I learned this the hard way when I fostered my first litter of kittens. I remember checking them in the morning and giving them breakfast before I left for work. They were eating, playful and doing well. After I came home, one immediately went downhill. I rushed it to the vet and nothing could save her. The vet said sometimes animals are born with malfunctioning parts that have a 'timer' so there is nothing that can be done. It could be 1 month after birth, or 5 years afterward, eating the best food and receiving the best care, it won't stop that timer.

Gratz on your new addition. Life goes on, so don't let your guilt second guess your experience as a caretaker.

Congratulations on the new addition... beautiful! I’ve been tempted by the chondros, but have elected to stick with those species I know best....for now anyway.

Over the years I’ve also lost a couple of snakes for no apparent cause, the first to come to mind is a juvenile Solomon Island ground boa that I’d had for a year. They can be difficult snakes to start from neonates, but after a year I felt this one was doing well, consistently eating, etc. I came home from work to find she had died during the day...no symptoms, nothing out of the ordinary, kept exactly like my others. The other unexpected death was my female snow corn. She was an adult when I got her, so I had no history for her or age..a friend got the pair as rescues and gave them to me. In the years I had her, I successfully bred her once, but otherwise she was just a pet. In both cases, I know my husbandry was correct for each species - especially since I had others of the same species that were thriving. That didn’t stop me from second guessing and trying to figure out if it could have been prevented. As others have said, sometimes it just happens and we don’t know why.

Thanks and yeah, Pat was my first GTP. He wasnt the most expensive but like Rosey, he has a spot in my heart as my first one. I decided that i was doing something right as Pat went from the little 9-10 inch worm to now about 2 feet or a little longer and definitely thicker plus having a really laid back attitude. So i threw down some real cash and picked up the little USCBB Biak X Oshy/Biak red neo. He's getting Pat's old cage since it seemed to work well for Pat and then when he gets bigger, I'll order him an AP A20 as well.

Going to be awhile before i get a Peruvian BCC now lol. I was actually just throwing out the feelers on the GTP FB page as i havent seen many reds for sale recently and was kind of surprised when a fairly well known breeder PM'd me he just had a litter that was ready to go. He hadnt even listed them yet but only had 1 red left and about 10 yellows which he was going to list. Think he had like 5 reds but was keeping 3 of them for holdbacks and was letting 2 go, one of which was spoken for.

And the little guy is laid back as you can see in the pic of the breeder holding it. Both parents are laid back too he said which was a plus for me.

Super rad man! He/she is gorgeous. It’ll be super fun to watch the color change. I wish my
    little Biak was a USCBB - he’s a little :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r:er. Pardon my
language. Love him to death though!

Theyll look very nice in identical cages next to each other!

    Well congrats, it's a beauty!

I've always wanted a GTP since i was a kid. Those and Gila Monsters always fascinated me. I honestly was really just waiting to see what i found first between a Peruvian BCC and a red neo gtp. When i found this little red neo for a pretty good price for being a USCBB, i just couldnt pass it up. kind of like when i found Gina. The guy sent me a bunch of pics of the little GTP as well as its feeding/shedding/pooping record cards since it was born.

Plus GTPs require a lot less space and stay considerably smaller although Biaks are the largest of the GTPs. But it should still only top out around 4 feet or so even if its a female.

And i really just got him because i have Pat's old cage empty. Dotties old cage as well as my extra T8 are both still empty and probably wont get filled for a while if ever. If i do get anything else, it will more than likely be a USCBB Gila Monster as they stay smaller than Beaded Lizards and like i said, I've wanted once since i was a kid. I might eventually get a Peruvian BCC too but not going to lie, most of my plans for snakes usually dont work out as i plan lol. Basically this pic is me if i went to a show lol.
    https://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...796a9965_o.jpg

And funny part, I was talking to the breeder on messenger today and he said, if the little neo turns out to be HY biak, he wants to buy it back if i sell it. That's why he kept all but 2 of the reds. He is hoping he hits the numbers on one of the reds turning out to be a HY. And thats the other reason i like GTPs. You really never know what you will end with until they mature and change color. You could buy an ugly duckling and end up with a real stunner.

HY means high yellow. Basically it's like a Kofiau GTP but in biak form. So basically with this little guy being from a Biak X OSHY Biak just means one of it's parents is from Ophiological Services which is Eugene Bessett and the HY means high yellow.

Here is dad who is the OSHY

WOW - very nice addition John - looks like you got bit by the arboreal ball python bug LOL I have to admit - the thought of adding a couple of these has crossed my mind - probably after visiting Forrest at his compound I'll be hooked.

You can't beat yourself up about losing Dottie - you did your best, it's not like you were blatantly negligent - your husbandry is always on point. I do hope you find peace soon bro.

Thanks. Yeah, i do like arboreals now. They require a lot less room plus stay smaller lol. Also i can build nice set ups and they wont get destroyed like the boas and Caesar do. Freakin Caesar was thumping his shelf all night last night and overall being a loud needy snake lol. He went through a 1.5lb rabbit like it was a rat. In and out in a matter of a few days.

And yeah, I thought about another pied BP as i like them but again, cant help but feel like if i had paid more attention to Dottie not eating and took her to the vet......although like everyone said, probably nothing to be done anyways as maybe she had a 'defective part' on a timer as like i said, she seemed to die peacefully, quiet and with no outward signs even after. I decided against another BP as I really dont want to go through the whole fasting stress again. With the boas, Caesar and the others, they eat anything anytime so it's easy to tell if smething is wrong with one of them.

And i got the new little boogers cage all set up until he grows big enough for an AP A20.

It is nice how they have a smaller footprint when caging space is a concern. The ability to create an entire bio enclosure and not have it destroyed is also very appealing.

My BP just ended a 4 month fast and I started to worry but she's eating again - not striking, but eating when I leave it in the enclosure for her....I can relate to your anxiety and I too wondered if something was wrong due to fasting in the summer.

Those A20's are very nice with a divider you can set both up and share a mister between the 2.

I dont use misters. As long as you keep the snake internally hydrated correctly, you shouldnt need much external. Thats the biggest problem with chondros is keeping them hydrated. I just inject the little ones' mice with warm spring water. Once they get bigger and can find the water bowls easier, then you dont really need to anymore.

Been talking to the breeder and he has sent me a video of him eating his little peach fuzzy mouse. He will be sent tuesday morning for a wednesday pickup at my local fedex hub as the breeder doesnt want to put the snake on a truck and is shipping him straight from his hub which goes straight to the plane and then off the plane and straight to my hub for me to pick up.

I was referring more for the bio set up as snakes get most of their fluids from feeders and the water bowl.

Oh. I just water the plants with my 1 gallon manual pump mister like once a week or so. And on rare occasions like once every couple weeks, i will mist the snakes and cages but it's fairly rare as i dont really to leave the snakes in a wet cage.

What do you do to keep the humidity up in that Exo Terra? Do the live plants raise it enough? I have a spare one so I was thinking giving my neonate jagpondro something besides a tiny tub.

Usually around 50-70% depending on how long ago i watered the plants. I do cover most of the top and do have a couple water bowls as well as the live plants.

    Congrats !!!

    What a Beauty !!!

    I told you...you need a red glow-worm, too :)

I'll never forget the couple of hours I spent at the Bessete's facility, it was amazing !! I got to handpick from a good 35 hatchlings or so. (After cleaning ALL their enclosures to get to know them, haha..)

Amazing facility (talk about clean enough to eat off of the floor !!!) Wonderful people. We had a great time. I hear they don't work with GTP's anymore, but back then, omg..there were so many, and all of them BEAUTIES !!

Well, Congrats!! You picked a great one.

Sorry to hear about Dottie. Could it be that she caught something from the Boas? I always hear that Boas can live with certain micro organisms for years without any signs or symptoms, but whatever they carry can kill a BP fairly quick. That said, I had a Angolan Python names Zina (hence my username). She grew and ate just fine, and one day I found her dead. She never even stopped eating. And she was around no new snakes, never had any symptoms, nothing. A true mystery and tragedy! But that is life, at times.

Thanks. I dont think she caught anything as she was eating this last winter and then quit around mid January. I didnt get any new snakes. Newest snake was Pat but that was about 9 months ago and Pat was quarantined and to this day is still using his own feeding tongs as i havent had a fecal done on him yet.

And Dottie did eat once back in August. I think it just a genetic defect as others have said as she went quietly and curled up like she was sleeping. And a couple days before that, i had her out and on me and she was exploring all over being curious Dottie. Kind of sucks still as i look down at her cage a lot still.

    So sorry...

I found Zina the same way. Curled up in her hide, as if nothing was wrong. As is she simply went to sleep and never woke up.

Sometimes it just happens that way. Take comfort in knowing that it was nothing you did. You do wonderful for your animals.

Lol yeah. I've been talking with the breeder through messenger all last week and today. He sent me a video of the little snake eating a FT mouse and sent me pics of the shipping box and label and stuff and we talked about how cold it was expected to get here tomorrow night. He is going to put a heat pack in there just in case but going to put it high up on the box so it just keeps the air warm but doesnt actually heat the little deli cup.

He's going into shed the breeder told me so he gave me the option of leaving it with him until it shed or just ship tomorrow. I'm just going to get it shipped tomorrow and just keep the cage nice and humid.

And my manager is being pretty cool about it since i work 6 days a week with only sunday off. So she is going to cover for me on wednesday and just told me to be in before 4:30 so she can go home lol.

Totally cool!!! You must be stoked! I know I am for you!!

Thanks Ziggy. My collection was stellar but a little dim now with Dottie gone. She was my pet rock but i did like her. Thought about picking up another pied BP. Maybe something a little wilder like a banana pied or albino pied but then i remember the struggle is real with BPs going off feed lol. Then i thought about a Peruvian BCC or another suriname. Then i realize i cant buy anything atm because the red neo tapped my of funds for a couple months lol.

Where are you looking? Morphmarket has listings as well as fauna classifieds, or make a post here asking folks for contact info and people they like and use...

I didn't even think about morphmarket. I've only used it to look at Ball Python's in the past.

Well, there was a delay in Indiana. SO he wont be here until tomorrow. The breeder texted me this morning with the info and called FedEx to see whats up. I too called FedEx and was my usual jerkish self to them lol. Apparently, they tried to tell me it was a weather issue except i checked the weather there and its fine so i called BS on the gal, She then had no answer. So i told her if she is going to lie to me or make up stuff, at least do something that i would have no way of checking for lol.

And the breeder got no where either. He checked with Reptile Express who also had a bunch of shipments heading to Seattle which were also delayed. They said there was a power outage up here somewhere yet i couldnt find it.

So bottom line, me and the breeder were pissed. He said if the little guy arrives dead, he will refund me but I'm hoping he is ok as i would rather have the snake and seeing 2 dead snakes in the past month would just kill me.

As for where to find GTPs for sale, I have done lots of research before buying. You can check on the GTP FB pages and you will get to know the good breeders there. My advice is either TK Chondros, Ian Bessel, Justin Wilbanks(who i got mine from), or if you are looking for a solid import, Ryan Burke at Clockworks or Harlin Wall. Not sure i would want to buy from a no name on Fauna or Kingsnake especially if you are getting a neonate.

Best of luck man. When I got Phyllis they effed something up, sent her from Cali to Missouri to Washington back to Missouri a day late, freezing cold, and looked dead. I was so pissed. FedEx guy didn’t even knock when he left her box (sideways) at my door when it was 42* out. 🤬
I’m sure yours will be fine, not really cold anywhere just yet. Keep us posted dude!
