Will power, I do not have...
Coming to a quarantine tub at my apt June 26th...
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d3d11d6156.jpg
March 2018 Rio Bravo bloodline Pokigron Suriname Red Tail Boa Constrictor, Male.
Mom was produced by Christopher Wolf 2011, dad was one of Gus Rentfro’s 2013 holdbacks acquired by Star Schaffer, then sold to ScottyDsntKnow here on the forums before his most recent home. https://ball-pythons.net/forums/show...=2013+Suriname
Can’t wait to meet the little guy. No idea what to name him yet... Gordon? Leonard? Albert? No clue haha. I’ll start him a thread when he gets here

Thank you bcr! I recently came across a 22year old Polaroid of me at the Stl zoo holding a boa, then came across this little dude and knew that I would cave in and get him. Seemed like the planets aligned or something haha

Pick is 11/26/95. I got my first snake (anerytheristic corn snake) on xmas a month after this photo

What a great pick up , congratulations :D Make sure to get a great picture of it's mustache when it comes (Love boa mustaches) :P
-
Very beautiful, congratulations. He’s very nice. I like the high widows peak on his saddles and his overall pattern. Love the color of his tail. Thanks for sharing.

Grats on joining the club. And it took you long enough. The 'snake hoarder' was getting close to selling some blood to poach that boy from you if you didnt bite the bullet lol. :D

Haha, well I'm glad you grabbed it because i really didnt have the cash for it but after seeing it, i probably couldnt have let it go either haha. I have everything for another snake except the snake. Problem is I still need to pay off Pat's cage next month as it ships end of next month and i also need to still call Bob at Pro Products and pay and have him ship a RHP to AP. Also need to get a hold of Dave at S3D for 4 sets of perch holders and an elevated water bowl holder. Plus my freakin drill died on me so i need to buy a new one of those....and yes...i still need a chest freezer hahaha.
Anyway, grats again man. Like i told you, that boa is awesome looking. I love how clean his sides are and how symmetrical and connected his saddles are as well as the clean side medallions. Good looking boy.
And you with a boa is like me with a GTP. Took me about 30 years to finally get one after seeing them in books as a 12 year old kid and saying "I want one of those!!".
Be prepared for a slowwwwww grower lol. Gina was about 2 feet when i got her. Now almost 1.5 years later and she is about 3 feet lol. Compared to Caesar who was about 2 feet when i got him and 2 years later, he is 8 feet haha. It's a completely different world with boas.
Do it right though and start him off on mice, none of this rat pinkies. All those pre weaned stuff is just a jellybean of milk and fat. I would guess he is already on small hopper mice.

Yep, he’s on f/t fuzzies weekly but they said he’d be ready for hoppers soon. I’ll start on fuzzies to hoppers every week to 10 days for the first handful of months or so and gradually spread out the schedule as prey size increases. I honestly think he’ll be kinda small as his dad didn’t look to be much more than ~5’ I’d guess and is about 5years old. And yeah it will be weird going from 3 fast growing, busy body pythons (aside from Geoffrey hahaha) to a boa whose growth rate could nearly be tracked geologically lol.
And something I hadn’t considered regarding the quarantine set up... quarantine will have to be in my bedroom because it’s the least trafficked and easiest-to-close-off room in the apt. It’s also the coolest temperature room I have. ~75*. I may actually have to poach Geoffrey’s T8 for QT in order to use the heat panel, unless I can McGuyver some heat tape to the lid of the tub to boost the ambient a degree or two? That feels dicey though. If only I had ordered Phyllis or Gerald a new cage sooner... will be fine though. The living room is 77* generally and I live alone so it’s not that much traffic really

Thanks Richard! I’m pretty excited to meet the little guy. Too bad I’m out and about most of next week, otherwise I’d have him sooner. Gonna go see a couple awesome concerts in Birmingham, AL and then go to New Orleans for the weekend. GIMMEEALLTHEGUMBO!!!

Thank you, brother. Another justification was that I’m probably maxed at 4 snakes, unless I breed Phyllis and Gerald at some point, and I’ve never had a boa before. 3 pythons and one new world constrictor is the roster for now. And since you’re maxed at 4 I’d give you another poki vicariously through me and I’ll keep appreciating carpets the same through you and ziggy lol! I think that’s the proper number of snakes between the three of us, right? 4-4-8?

Well using heat tape on the side or top is doable. A lot of guys use heat tape on the side for neonate GTP tubs.
As for ambient temps, 77F isnt bad but I wouldnt want it to drop from there. Like i said, i keep the cage temps on all my snakes anywhere from 77-80F and they spend most of the time on the cool side anyways. But like i said, I wouldnt want it to drop lower.
You could poach the T8 from Geoffrey's and put him in a tub with heat tape on the floor of the cage. But again, i wouldnt want it to get below 77F although he could handle a drop much better than a baby boa.
Time to order another T8 for Geoffrey lol.
And i personally wouldnt worry too much about the traffic. Boas are kind of like retics, they arent really too scared. just give him a couple appropriate hides and he should be fine.
For feeding with Gina, i fed her every week when she was on small hoppers and as the mouse size increased, so did the time frame. By the time she was on adult mice, she was eating every 14 days. And now that she is on weaned rats, she gets those every 2 weeks as well.
You will know when they get hungry as they will be out at night creeping around lol. i catch Louie and Gina out creeping around on the plants and shelf or sitting on the litter dam when it gets close to dinner day. Same with Luna who is supposed to be an ambush predator lol.

8? If you mean me, i got 9 lol. I plan on one more. I'm like Ziggy in that i want a nice round number....so 10 sounds good lol. Plus what the heck is one more mouth to feed when you are talking 9 snakes already.....well once i have a chest freezer haha.
Thats why i gotta be picky. i keep bouncing from another BCC to another SD retic to a woma to another GTP to an ETB to a BHP lol. It will probably boil down to what grabs when i got the cash in hand......although right now, a nice pinched saddled golden topped Peruvian BCC sounds really nice haha. Another retic sounds like work. I have no idea how you havent gone crazy with 2 push crazy retics. Caesar was driving me up a wall with scuffed chins and fat lips when he was younger and pushing....
-
Oh also one other thing.....I will probably be crucified but you know, I have actually been thinking of a Clown BP too lol. Always liked them but like i said, my want changes between the snakes i listed above daily haha.

I want to stay loyal to AP, but if I were to get a T8 right now, i might try out one of the reptile basics cages. Would be way faster if I just needed a quick fix. Really, I could just keep the apt warmer. Thermostat is in the hall with no windows so it’s cooler there. Set at 75* the living room is 77* and so is the snake room. Can’t put new guy in there because of quarantine though, which will be tough as it is. I could set the AC to 76-77* and run some fans and sweat out the better part of summer lol...
Also need to have another herpstat on backup. I’ve got an open outlet on one but, quarantine. Have to use my backup jumpstart for the moment. Knew I should have bought another redline 2 during their last sale

You should see some of the clown stuff my buddy has bred. He made axanthic clowns last year that were totally bonkers. Awesome looking animals. Checkout cjspets.com. Pretty much just does ball pythons anymore but had GTPs locked up this season and some cool colubrid projects. Check out the Nile Ball and Sugar Nile Ball. Both combos that he was the first to make.

Oh, well if the temps now are being pushed down by AC, then yeah, just throw the BCC in the AP cage and turn down the AC and sweat it until you get a new cage.
Well you do know RBI cages i believe only offer drop down acrylic door FYI. Plus with another T8, you can stack them for a cleaner look. But i hear ya on the shipping time lol.
As for another T-stat, just go for broke and order a Herpstat 4 since you have 4 snakes. Then if for some reason you end up with another snake, you will have a back up T-stat. But the Jumpstart will work too. i use them for my quarantine tanks.

Nice. Will do. It's more of i like them but they are BPs at the end of the day and will spend like 99% of the time in a hide hahaha.

Well I’d only need to change the AC if the BCC stays in the tub. If I steal Geoffrey’s cage then I’m set with the heat panel.
I would go for the herpstat 4 but the way the outlets are arranged I wouldn’t be able to plug 4 Pro Heat panels into it. The power cord to the panels is a sideways orientation and won’t allow for 4 of them that close to each other without the cord becoming an obstruction to the plug next to it, ya know?
And I hear you about ball pythons being, well, ball pythons lol. Amazing to look at but not the most interesting captives. Anyway give CJ’s page a look. That’s the guy I got my first snake from over two decades ago. Makes some amazing animals
Back on to bcc topic... anything else I should be prepared for? I feel like I’ll be fine but this is new territory for me

Oh yeah, i forgot Pro Products uses thoses goofy side plugs lol. Figured Bob would have figured out those things are more trouble than worth. You can always just use short extension cords from the unit to the plugs to give yourself room.
As for the BCC, you got the cage and RHP. Just the basics like a couple hides and a water bowl and a temp/humidity gauge. Boas are kind of like retics and arent that scared for the most part. Some are more shy than others but it seems all my BCI and Gina werent very shy. Louie the BCL was the only shy one but i have been told BCL as a species are shy.

Got quarantine set up and monitoring temps. So far it spot on. Have a CHE on the top rack to help boost ambient temp and UTH set at 94* is giving a perfect 90* on the tub floor. Really wanted QT in the bedroom because it’s easier to close off than the living room. Also if I did QT in the living room then Phyllis can’t come out to cruise the apt haha! Then I can check on new little guy in the morning, shower, check the other critters, go about my day and then check on him when I go to bed. Not the best quarantine system but it’s the best arrangement that’s possible in a small 2 bed apt. Of course I’ll also PAM everyone’s cages and tubs before the new arrival shows up as preventative measure.

That’s not a bad idea with the extension cords. Not exactly sure why that never crossed my mind as that’s the plainly obvious solution. Just wish spyder would make a redline 4! Throwing blue into the palette would ruin my perfectly black and red color scheme lol. I’ll stick with my two H2 redlines and backup jumpstart for now. Then I’ve got a thermostat channel for every critter and no more. Gotta call myself maxed out at 4 critters for a while. May order a couple extra probes to make alternating from RHP to belly heat more convenient when seasonal temps change. Phyllis is the only one currently on belly heat though so not a huge deal
And yeah, I’ve got hides, Infrared thermometer, hygrometer/thermometer in the tub, water bowl, good to go. We’ll see how small he is when he gets here but I had planned to use my old small/med exoterra hide and and old box turtle shell I’ve had for like 25+ years. If he doesn’t fit either of those I’ve got two large RBI hides, which I’m sure are too big though. Could just crumple some newspaper or paper towels in them to make them feel more secure.

He'll easily fit a small hide if he is that young. Gina who is an Aug 2016 snake fits a large RBI hide with lots of room to spare. And a lot of the time since I've given all the little snakes 2 bags of cypress, they have been sitting outside the hides buried under the damp cypress all stretched out.
As for PAM, i personally dont like to use chemicals on my snakes so my advice would be to just spray PAM on a rag outside and then just wipe down the outside of the cages and any cords and table legs/table tops that the cages sit on or anywhere that mites could get into the cage, especially around the vent holes and door openings.
And for the QT cage, i would spray the PAM now. That will give it plenty of time to dry before the snake arrives. Although honestly, i kind of broke the rule and didnt QT Gina when i got her lol. I know you should but i have been rather sloppy about QTing my snakes recently. I just had faith in the breeders i got from as they were big players in the game who have a big reputation to hold up so i couldnt imagine them taking chances with tarnishing it. And yes, i know that is still no excuse lol.

Sauzo, you know better... [emoji6] especially with as large as your gang of critters has gotten.
Got the quarantine tub PAMed and just prepped a few sheets of white craft paper as bedding so I can change em out quickly and then have backups already treated. As for the established critters, I’ll probably do a deep clean and wipe everything with a PAMed rag before putting substrate back in and such.
Really glad my MacGuyver QT set up is working so nicely. Temps are perfect 78-79* cool side, 80-81* mid zone, and UTH hotspot of 89-90*. I almost got rid of that lamp and CHE when I moved a couple weeks ago and really glad now that I didn’t. Setting that on the top shelf of my wire rack gives a perfect ~4* ambient temp boost from 12” or so above the tub

Yeah i know. I do wash my hands and use separate feeding utensils for new arrivals though. And i mess with them last. Heck Pat still has his own forceps for feeding as he is the newest addition.

It’s better than nothing! And to be totally transparent, I didn’t quarantine Phyllis when I got her either. Was my first time owning multiple snakes and was lucky she was completely perfect... aside from showing up a day late and freezing cold looking dead. Thanks fedex

Yeah, i mean you should quarantine everything but like i said, i sometimes preach it but dont follow it. I probably got lucky but so far, none of my snakes have had any issues. Even Pat who was a CBB. I havent had a fecal done on him yet but when i looked at his poop the past 6 months, it is always well formed, a nice deep uniform brown color and it's been almost 6 months and nothing wrong. I still use his own utensils like i said and he is the last to get messed with after the other snakes. I'll take a fecal in to my vet one of these days.
Plus like i said, i buy from very reliable breeders which i know isnt a guarantee. Now if i got a snake off CL or some Joe Blow guy, then you bet your dollar, that snake would be upstairs in one of the fish tanks on paper towels for 3 months lol. Kind of the reason i dont buy snakes from Joe Blow or go to reptile shows.....also i know myself well enough and if i went to a reptile show, I know dang well I would come home with 3 new snakes.....one for T8 and 2 for the 40 gallon breeder tanks hahaha.
And FedEx probably hates me as I went postal on them when they messed up delivering Harley and made them drive back and deliver her as there was no way, I was going to leave her on the truck for 8 hours until they brought her to the hub for me to pick up. They havent screwed up an order since and Harley was my first order with them with live animals hahaha. Of course i am also sitting on the doorstep at 10am cleaning handguns waiting for them lol.

FedEx didn’t even knock for Phyllis after she was a day late. I was waiting anxiously in the living room and saw the truck pull up. When I opened the door, dude was already walking back to the truck and her box was blatantly laid on its side, said “live harmless reptile” on the box, and it was about 42* outside. I was beside myself...

How the heck did I miss this post?!?!
Yes, another retic is absolutely work. Two retics feels like taking care of at least 12-18 of anything else lmao!
And how have you not noticed that having two retics has indeed made me crazy?! Haha
I love em both to death but I feel like this boa will be a reminder to myself that retics are the exception, not the rule. Nothing like them, but there’s also nothing like them... you know what I mean 🤣

Update. Little boy ate today, will be ready to eat when he gets here, and is also going into shed. Was told he’ll either be fresh shed or just about to when he arrives

Re: Will power, I do not have...
Alright folks, need help with a name for this critter that gets here Tuesday. Kinda thinking Gordon as my other two male animals have names starting with G. Although I’ve always liked the name Leonard as well. I tend towards slightly older sounding names for my snakes. Fire away!

Dude arrives in less than 12 hours. What’s his name folks? I’m kinda leaning towards Leonard/Leo. Gordon/Gordo would be cool too. Oooh what about Elmer or Eugene?!? Hahah
He might be nameless for a bit if I can’t make up my mind. Phyllis didn’t have a name for like 3 weeks after I got her. She was just “baby snake”. Might be the same case for the boa but we’ll see

I should really go to sleep, but... baby boa just made it to Memphis according to the tracking updates! 9.5 hour max before he’s here

Most certainly will do! I’ll probably start a progression thread tomorrow but without a name for the critter yet. Get length, weight, wipe with reptile spray on a white paper towel to check for mites, handle for a minute or two to check him over then let him chill out for a couple days or so before attempting feeding

I like Leonard, and it gives you the ability to call him Leo for short. He looks like a Leonard. Some other possible ideas that I think could fit him well would be Bernard (Berny for short), Clarence, Earnest, Felix, Julian, Homer, or Oscar... Good luck sleeping tonight! :P

I like Gordon.
And,, the excitement is killing me!!👍👍😊

Lol he can be your new snake vicariously through me. I’m on the couch in the living room planted right next to the front window, looking up about every 9 seconds or anytime I hear a vehicle haha
