    BP/Snake Tracking app for Android
Hey guys moving this from another thread I responded to and making a list. Basically I want to find out what interest there is for this and if it would be worth the time. I saw a few ideas in the other thread and I will list them here. If something like this interests you let me know and I will see if it is something I can put together.

    Wants:
    • Schedules
    • Inventory
    • Ability to scan cards
    • Database of animals and genetics

I will update this as I think of things or people add to them. Thanks all.

Something that notifies when someone needs to eat! Similar to when you log onto iherp and it lists "who's hungry".

how about the ability to network your phone with your PC so changes made from the remote terminal (phone) are reflected in master record stored on your PC

I was weighing the 2 options with that.
    1. Use a web site that can be accessed from anywhere and use the app to update the DB that the site pulls from
    2. Make it a local app that only you can see on your machine and phone.

    What would you guys prefer?

Me I like my records on my machine. 5 years from now if iHerp goes belly up or just shuts down.. I don't want records for 5000 animals just lost..

Definitely local. Ability to record sheds, feeding, and breeding (pairing/copulation/clutch data) activity. Something similar to Degei would be great, but I don't think it needs to go quite as in-depth with the activities.

All of this sounds great! Especially an ability to "scan" but really, with an iPhone/droid you could just grab a name from the list and then have a set of buttons with different actions.

When you've got 50+ snakes picking a name from a list can get old REAL quick. :D

I am aware (105 snakes currently, not including ones for sale). If a list were set up with an alphabetical scroll bar on the side, finding the right snake wouldn't be to hard. The. Again, if you don't give them names, that would complicate that plan.

I was thinking for those with multiple racks I would add something to scan the racks barcode in and that would show the list of animals in the rack. This would be in addition to scanning a specific snakes code in or choosing it from a list.

Love this whole idea!!! I only have 3 balls right now so I'm using iherp but the mobile site isn't the greatest for tracking and it would be so much easier to have something right on my phone rather than writing down everything then transferring later. Plus, as we add more I can see this becoming more and more of a pain!!

So would the program generate bar codes that you could print out and then it would recognize? Maybe you could have it be flexible. The barcode could be assigned to a single animal, or to a rack and bring up a list?

I think this is a great idea. I was using Deigi (sp?) for a while, but it was annoying to have to boot my computer and then keep track of what I was doing in the snake room and going back and forth, etc.

A phone app, with local connectivity to a computer would be great. So as I'm cleaning/feeding/pairing/etc I could just input it as a went.

Now you need to port it to iPhone!!!

The local app that sits on the computer will be generating codes, I dont see why we couldnt just use existing ones as well. I will look into it.

    Quick update everyone,

We are putting up a survey to iron out some final details about the flow the application and how you would like to see things. If you could go here: Survey and give us your input we would greatly appreciate it. Feel free to add anything we missed or you think useful in the comments section or a message to us so that we can make this the most useful app possible.

We have been posting screenshots and updates to our blog: Blog

The survey is also posted on the blog. No taking the test twice now! :colbert:

For now it is only Android on the mobile side, but we are planning on using the desktop app to make a web app that can be accessed by and phone/browser.

We may be able to port it to the iphone once we have a stable version with Android. I will leave that to the code guy to answer ;)

The HTC Windows phone actually uses a version of Windows on it, not Android. Nice looking phone though.

Also I may need some experts in other snakes to help with the population of the morph lists for those. I should be good for BPs and Corns. The rest is up to you guys and google.

Instead of a list, you could always make it much easier on you and us. Just give us a spot to imput the species and morph. Since there are so many diffrent speieces and morphs

You can type in the what you want where the drop down list is, if it isnt in the list you typing it in will add it to the database. I just wanted to try and give a base to go off.

if you can make it for i-phone, do you think you can make it for the i-pod touch for those of us that don't use a smart phone? then we can transfer info via wifi.
BTW great idea coming up with this app.

The issue with anything iP.... like the phone or touch is that it takes some time to get certified to be allowed to publish apps on their platform. Possible yes, is it the first thing we do after Android, probably not. Do not despair though, we will make a nice web interface that you can use on the iPhones and such that will work just as well I think.

Define running :-p It is running right now on my machine. It shows the inventory, breeds, feeds, sheds, all that goodness.

Not running without errors, but soon. We are shooting for mid January release of a alpha to the public. I will post something on the blog soon about signing up to be a tester if you are interested.

The plan is to take it to the upcoming show at Harve De Grace to show a few breeder friends of mine and get their inputs, then a little more testing and a test group should be released soon after that. Thanks to all that took the survey, we had some great responses in there!

We will be at the show this Saturday the 8th, I plan on getting there around lunch if anyone is interested in taking a look at the desktop app. Just shoot me a message and let me know and I will arrange a time/place to meet up. I will not have a table this go around but in the future we will.

Still working on it. We added another dev to the team that is working on the web side. It will be a very professional app when all is said and done now. These guys are much better at coding than I am :)

Going to sit down and get them devoted to a release schedule and then I will let you all know. Sorry its taking longer than originally expected, it will be worth it.

Just realized my earlier post doesn't seem to have gone through. Costs will be minimal for the normal user. We are looking for the desktop app to be in the 15-20$ range. There will be add-ons or additional levels of the program if you are looking to do things on a larger scale.

Things like the ability to use a bar code scanner attached to a laptop to do batch activities on many animals simply by scanning them, integrating your database into a website like Zen Cart for selling your animals, additional databases for your feeder inventory and tracking of live or frozen feeders, and a long list of other things. We will get a nice post together with details and get that out to you all on our site.

The droid app will be fairly inexpensive as well. I would venture a guess of 5-10$ but cannot say for sure, that is up to the dev on that side.

We appreciate any feedback you guys may have, just let us know what you think.
