So...
So I read the shedding threads and what not but I just can't seem a container big enough. And the only portion the needs to come off is half of the upper portion of her head and a little bit of her neck. I've been keeping the humidity up, tried soaking her yesterday when all her skin came off except her head and a little bit of her neck.
I don't know what to do.
-
Re: So...
Put her in a damp towel and let her crawl through it. That's a helpful tip that I luckily haven't had to use but have read here on the site.
-
Re: So...
The only thing the skin doesn't have pieces coming up, where there should be, to make it able to slide off with help of a damp towel, I've tried the damp towel method.... it's still on there pretty good.
-
Re: So...
Hmm, I'm not sure. Hopefully a more experienced bp keeper would chime in..?
-
Re: So...
Haha... I hate it when they have have shed issues.
-
Re: So...
wet a pillow case with warm water squeeze it then put ur snake in it for 15 minutes
-
Re: So...
A pillow case and put her in it? Will that seriously work. That seems interesting and wet... like I already am! Sounds fun...

I'm wet from earlier little go around ick.
-
Re: So...
yea tie the top and the snake will continuously rub against the pillow case
-
Re: So...
How long do you think I should keep her in there? I mean the skin is seriously not pulled up on her head, just on her neck really.

Re: So...

Re: So...
I shall love you for ever if this works!
-
Re: So...
tell me if it works or not
-
Re: So...
But I think I will try it tomorrow after work only because I think I may have aggitated her with trying to do the rag method.
-
Re: So...
u could make a humid hide by get a container cut a hole in it put paper towels on the bottom moisten them and she will just use it like every other hide
-
Re: So...
I could but, I have no extra containers laying around to do that, nor do I have space in the tank to put it. I wish I did... I'm getting a 40gal soon... It's 107 dollars with tax.... and I'm getting the new water bowl and all for her too at the same time which came to about 170dollars.
-
Re: So...
when u get the 40 gallon use foil tape and tape 85 % of the screen to keep humidity and heat in and are u using a heat lamp
-
Re: So...
Wait. So you paid around $50 for a waterbowl?? That seems a bit off.
Hopefully the pillowcase works for you. I saved a snake from a very bad shed with the pillowcase method. :)
-
Re: So...
she said water bowl and all. Also i want to see ur guinea pigs....that sounds weird lol

Well the mesh on this lid is actually a lot smaller than the ones you use lid locks on. And I'm using the 100wat Daylight Heat Lightbulb then the 75wat nocturnal heat lamp bulb ....

At my pet store the bigger water bowl is 24.89. I got a price on the tank, waterbowl, and the new UTH made specifically for that tank size.

Re: So...
u should get a uth and a thermostat heat lamps kill humidity and tanks cant hold humidity
-
Re: So...
Yikes. Ever thought about switching to tubs? That is a lot of money to spend more than once on an animal.
-
Re: So...
See... I believe tubs are so unpleasing to the eye >.<
-
Re: So...
Nothing wrong with droppin some cash for a tank display that looks nice and better suits your animal. What kind of substrate do you use?
-
Re: So...
I understand but if you switched to tubs you would save hundreds of dollars and you would never have another humidity problem.
Iris tubs are actually very clear and if you put some fake plants in there it can look quite nice!
I agree that tubs aren't nice to look at but I honestly think that the snakes are happier and thrive better in plastic housing. To combat these conflicting thoughts I added some nice cabinet hardware to the tubs in my rack. It makes the whole think look less like some funky storage and more like a decorative drawer, with some AWESOME LOOKING SNAKES!!

I use retro bark.

I guess I could do all the same stuff to it and would probably save space and give me option to do racks and get more but I just I don't like the look I mean I saw how nice the one girl had her set up in one of the pictures... it just peeves me to see them in containers >.< .... that sometimes even looks way too small for them.... I kind of like the open-ness of tanks... I may just save up and get a RBI, when I figure out how the heating would work in it.
-
Re: So...
look at it like this its like they r living in a store front window. Tubs for them is like a comfy apartment.
-
Re: So...
how does heating in them work?
-
Re: So...
u put a uth under the tub and put the thermometer probe in the tub right above the uth
-
Re: So...
-
Re: So...
yep and do u have a thermostat
-
Re: So...
Yeah I got thermostat, but not with a probe.
So.. I'm looking on Reptile Basics Inc... and looking at the rack system, it says it already comes with heat, could I add to it if it's not like enough, and would my baby be able to escape. Because what I'll do is save up and get this set-up, since I guess I could still use the retro bark and decorate it accordingly and be able to have room for two more when the time comes! Since I'm looking for 'em for after christmas <3.
-
Re: So...
the heat is enough and they cant escape and what thermostat do u have
-
Re: So...
It just a thermostat, the regulates the whole tank temp. I know, not the greatest, which is why I'm really trying to get everything situated now and learn so when christmas comes... well I am going to be a happy camper, since I'm getting another Ball Python.... after christmas, yay!

Re: So...
OR get any other thermostat that fits your budget. Ranco, Johnson, BAH Herp Power, etc. Dont think that a herpstat is the only way to go with thermostats. That sort of info makes people not buy them sometimes. If you tell someone that their only option is a 110 dollar herpstat and its not in their budget, guess what? That snake isnt getting a thermostat anytime soon.
Vesta:
Tubs are going to be cheaper to keep, but if a tank is your preferred method then go with that. BPs arent really display animals so a lot of us keep them in tubs as that is the easier and cheaper way to do it. If you prefer to have a nice display, by all means do that. There are a lot of threads on here that deal with proper tank set up, and once you have it set up properly, it is just as easy to maintain as a tub...with the exception of cleaning.

Thanks, pav. Though, I'm actually considering the tubs, whilst adding a display inside so that they don't look so bad. The ones off RBI are actually really nice and with a ranco thermostat, a thermometer, and the tub set up its 409... which is in the long run not bad since the tub set up has three in it. I'll work on getting this, though the keep isn't the problem, but I always worry about humidity of course I keep mine up but if I'm working and come home it's pretty low.... It needs constant misting if this is going to be better in that sense by all means up up for it. I'm sure I can do plenty to make the tub look good. Especially after I get my room set up. I can't wait. I'm really in love with BPs and this site doesn't help lmao... with all the different morphs and what not. lmao.
-
Re: So...
Though I believe they should be like display animals, they are beautiful and should be shown off, not hidden. That's why I think they should have elaborate caging.

Hey good on ya, racks are not a bad way to go. The problem with your humidity in your tank can be alleviated with proper insulation of the screen top. You need to have about 75-85% of it covered with a sheet of plastic and then a sheet of foil. You only need to leave enough room for air to get in and for your heat lamp (if youre using one) to sit on. Heat lamps are another big issue as to why you might have humidity issues. Just sit here and use the search function and look up humidity, tanks. Youll get so many threads its not even funny. It is a common problem.
On the other hand, if you think a rack/tub set up is what you need, go for it dude. BPs like to hide and in a display youre going to have to decorate for the display of it more than the BP of it...BPs are low maintenance...2 hides, a water bowl and some substrate...some f00dz and they love life. And yes, tubs do tend to be a LOT better at maintaining humidity.
Whatever you do good luck and enjoy. Careful...BPs....once you start you cant stop. See my signature? It all started with one rescue....in MAY. LOL :gj:

Of course I'm using a heat lamp! What would I be if I didn't. I don't want her to go cold now! I've been using a blanket, which is doing a better job then nothing... But I think I'm going to do the tubs, decorate them and just make them a little more eye catching then I've seen peoples. It peeves me on what substrates are used and not used... etc. I just think, ya even though they don't need much, they are a pet and just like you would a dog, give them stuff and make things look nice for them. I absolutely love my BP, and she's the nicest and most beautiful damned thing I've ever owned. I'm def. a snake person.
I'm already starting my search for the next BP.... I know I want at least four... I know I'm going to go over that one day... lmao. I'm thinking Hypo Mojave... But there are soo many combinations that are absolutely amazing like the Ghost Butter Bee! Just wow. And omg... I rescued my BP, too! And ... I believe in May, too!

Re: So...
Plus, my pets, all of them my degu and my BP get the best of everything. That's where all my money goes to. Haha.

Re: So...
Your humidity problem is most likely stemming from the use of the lamps. They will suck the humidity dry.
Most people can usually find a way to heat tanks just fine using only UTHS (2 usually). Although it is possible to just use one UTH if your room temp is around 80*.
I don't remember if you have said it before but what kind of thermometers are you using to measure how hot it is?
Sounds like the "thermostat" you have isn't really a thermostat. If it was, it would have a probe.

I second Kaorte here..... you don't need a heat lamp for balls, they get their heat from the UTH. If you were housing bearded dragons then you'd need a heat lamp.
Scrap the heatlamp (IMO they do more harm than good) and get a thermostat with a probe. You say your ball gets the best of everything? It appears that what you think is the best is a little off the mark....
-
Re: So...
I think that's a little harsh to say. I've spent a lot on the heater lamps believing she needed it. That's not OFF ... that's being more safe than sorry. Plus, from the glass terrarium set up tutorial sticky-ed, it seems I've done everything right on there. So, thanks for your un-necessary hate.
And people should read, no offense to you Kaorte because you've been very helpful!, I'm actually going to be spending to get a new habitat for my BP.
And the fact that my room is under 80 degress because I'd die at night in an 80 degree room, the heat lamp keeps it at the ambient heat is should be. The mesh is more the reason the humidity gets out.
-
Re: So...
I don't think Bundu Boy was being hateful at all.
It is the opinion of many (including myself) that heat lamps do more harm than good. Even with the screen top covered, they will still reduce the humidity quite a bit.
I would still be interested in knowing what kind of thermometers you have and where they are placed in the tank and what they read.
-
Re: So...
wow Vesta, chill a bit, these guys are very experienced and have helped many many people including myself a lot, so I would take there advice for it.
I turned off my heat lamp and have noticed much better humidity by doing that and also putting a damp towel on the top half of the cage.
