What would u do if you were me?

okay so i have a Baby ball python, and i plan on getting another one in the next month. my current bp is in a 10 gal tank, and i plan on getting more snakes over the years.. i was wondering if i should build a 4 slot 41qt tub rack(which i already have the plans for and will cost super cheap), or just buy bigger tanks for them(which takes more space).

The only con about the rack is the humidity. The last time i used tubs, the humidity was to high. but ive heard from people that as long as there isnt condensation dripping from the sides of the tubs(which there wasnt), than the BPs are fine. What do you think?I need some professional answers from people who have alot of experience with bps and racks.

another thing is that im worried that they wont feel like they have enough space. i want them to be happy and a 41qt seems like kinda small..

Adult females are housed in 41qt tubs, not tiny babies. Small juvies are housed in 6qt to 15qt tubs. Larger snakes over 500-700g can be housed in 28-32qt tubs. Small adult females and adult males can be housed in 32qt tubs. I would never put a tiny hatchling in a 41qt tub.

They do not require alot of space. In the wild, they hide in rodent burrows and in small, dark crevices. If you try to anthropomorphize them, you will get a very stressed out, non-eating snake and a frustrated keeper.

I'd go with a rack for sure. It'll make maitenance so much easier as your collection increases. Also, your snakes will feel more secure, which may help them eat better.

On the humidity issue, what are you using for ventilation? I use a pencil saudering iron and melt holes in the side of the tub like this:

__O___O___O___O___O___O___O___O___O___O___O___O___O___O

etc. (O=hole, ___= space)


I generally leave about one inch of space horizontally between each hole, and I have holes all the way around the tub. That should definitely keep your humidity down.

If you plan on getting more snakes in the future, then go with a rack. If you plan on building your own rack using 41 qt tubs then that will be plenty of space for a full grown adult ball python. As far is humidity goes, I understand what your saying about the humidity being to high, i have two RBI 32qt racks and I drilled a good 40 plus holes drilled on each sides of my tubs and the humidity is still in the high 60's - low 70's. People get paranoid that the humidity needs to be this exact amount but the humidity in Africa isn't always that and a little high humidity isn't going to kill your snake. Plus, you'll see as the seasons change, your humidity will change as well so it'll balance out. Mine eat and shed fine and haven't shown any signs of stress or illness and I've had my rack for well over 6 months. As long as their is no condensation and there is plenty of air flow, you'll be good.

I have only heard that they're fine if there is no condensation. I can say that my accurite sometimes gets as high as 75% and my BP is fine. Just use small water bowls and make good ventilation and I think it should be fine.

As for a 41 qt being too small for a bp, I think they should be fine. Here is a 41 qt sitting on top of a 66 qt, housing my bp. The 41 qt is for my baby boa, when I get her. I may have to get smaller though I don't know.

thanks for the descriptive response! im going to build the rack this weekend (i guess with some sort of pre coated wood from home depot). im guessing its going to cost around 120$ including the tubs.i already have heat and im using the same thermostat ive used forever. its a cheap one but it does the job:). and maybe next year when i get more snakes and can afford it im gona get a herpstat. im so excited! :):):):):):D:D:D:D

And the wood you are talking about is probably melamine, that is what mine is made of.
