HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
I am freaking out. One of my babies is hatching with a knot in its umbilicus. I need advice on what to do. It has a knot at the base of the yolk sac, and I am in need of some advice. I can't get it untied!!!!!!
Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Sorry to hear that. Good luck with the hatchling. Wish I had some words of advice, but I have never had that happen.

Heather you can do this...
inspect to see if the knot is part of the cord or a fatty deposit.
Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Keep everything moist & see if you've a herp vet near you. If not, let me know about the fat, I can walk you trough a few things if you don't have a herp vet to help you out. But that's going to be a big undertaking, hon. Keep your cool & keep everything moist.
Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Most of the knot is yolk... but it is around the umblicius
Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Heather,
If you can't untangle it, I would tie it off above the cut near the belly with a piece of unwaxed dental floss. Then cut it about half an inch from the tie off. Bruce Whitehead had a similar thing happen. See this thread:

Of course the other option is to find a herp vet if you don't feel comfortable with it.

I had a baby hatch out like this a month ago... I had to cut the cord... Tie it off with thread and then take the yellow yolk of a chicken egg that is room temp and mix it up good. Then take one of those baby syringe that have no needle point and "pump" the babies stomach with the yolk. I had to do this a few times until she took pinky rats on her own.
He/she will be ok...

I don't believe his cutting of the umbilicus was the cause of the death. Looks like other contributing circumstances.
