What do you recommend for a thermostat. I don't want to pay more then 30-40 bucks and I am only using it for one 7 self rack.

For a 7 shelf rack, I would definitely recommend that you spend more than 30-40. In fact, I would recommend a reliable thermostat for even one shelf. Take a look at the Herpstat or Helix thermostats available.

    What he said ^

If it fails you won't just kill one animal, you'll kill 7. Spend the $99 and get a herpstat. Even better, get a herpstat with a $10 rheostat inline in the very rare chance the herpstat fails.

Yea, if you are running 7 tanks then you gotta get a high end thermostat. If you are just running one, then you can get by spending that amount with a Reptitemp 500r. Thats what I did and its been working. Im gonna upgrade to a better one eventually.

Either of the two mentioned will work for a single rack- they can handle about 500 watts...IMHO get the fail safe model though, even THE BEST units eventually wear out & fail.

I use a double unit Johnson or Ranco for large groups of racks, the second unit acts as a fail-safe in case the primary fails. 7 years into keeping snakes the extra little $$ I spent saved me Thousands of dollars. You can skimp on substrate- use shredded newpaper & junk mail (no staples ot sticky stuff), don't skimp on your heat & T-stat. :colbert:
