Any way I could try and stop this?
I just got back from a vacation at the ocean, and I have to say I'm quite upset. For those of you who have been to Ocean City or somewhere similar, you'd know that hermit crabs are big in all the souvenir shops. I've always hated the fact, but I've come to accept the sale of hermit crabs on the boardwalk. However, I did not expect what I saw this time. Not only were there hermit crabs, but now they have aquatic frogs (about half an inch long in not even a half gallon of water) and anoles! The anoles are kept in the tiny hermit crab containers with a plastic palm tree, and that's it. No heat source, and I seriously doubt they're feeding them what they need. This should not be legal. Animals aren't souvenirs, and IF you're going to sell them as such, you should at the very least be keeping proper care of them. Is there nothing me, or anyone could do? Or do I just have to watch this happen?
Re: Any way I could try and stop this?
Animals as souvenirs? Animals are not meant to be a souvenir. I bet the people who purchased these "souvenirs" are probably taking the worst care possible for them. A living creature should not be something to sell for a souvenir. That's just not right, they need the proper care to survive.
Re: Any way I could try and stop this?
The anoles and frogs were likely purchased from a bait dealer. I guess you could argue which would be a worse fate, being sold as a souvenir or impaled on a hook.

Are you serious? Anoles and frogs as bait? I've never heard of that.

I have seen this too, Brittany. I always enjoyed hermit crabs as pets as a child, but the anole thing is going too far. I don't know if there is anything you can do. I have also lately heard people tell me that they've been carnival prizes as well....

Yes, it's actually quite common, I believe that one of the reasons that Lizards are one of the only reptiles that can be shipped through the US mail is because of the bait industry lobbying for it.

I might get eaten alive on here for this, but frogs make great catfish and bass bait. Never used anoles before, but I have heard lizards make great bait as well.
