Genetics of Granite
My Lesser to Normal breeding resulted in this male:

I haven't actually looked into granite much, as it hasn't been that interesting to me, but with this little guy cropping up in a random breeding, I am wondering if it is a recessive? If it is, then perhaps this guy could be a genetic granite. His granite markings are very consistant.

Re: Genetics of Granite
Most of what I have read say that granites are dom/codom, does the mother have any granite speckling? Also I know they say alot of granites are a random thing.

Check out the hunters guide and see if it has some or all the traits of being genetic and decide if it needs to be on the top of your dinking list.

Re: Genetics of Granite
Well, looking at the mom, she is not a granite.

The dad is a lesser platinum.

He has some granitish markings, but I never noticed because he's a lesser, and also has a few larger spots.
Here is another baby from the same clutch:

This lesser has a lot of granite markings on him, very noticeable--more than dad, but he also has a spot or two.
Do you suppose the dad is a granite with some spots, and these little ones are better examples of the type?
The presence of these granite markings in the other hatchlings leads me to believe this is much less likely to be random. But this lesser does not have the broken neck stripe--his normal sibling granite does.

Re: Genetics of Granite
I have heard that enviromental factors can effect the pattern on normals but if it were me I would hold back both animals posted and try proving the granite to be genetic. And I think that is one of the most attractive lessers I have seen. but I am kinda partial to granites and thats just cuz I think they have the potential to be a really cool enhancer morph on projects that haven't been seen yet.

Re: Genetics of Granite
Ralph has proven his line of granites co- dom. If you look at the super granites he produced last year(I believe) they will make you think about working with them. Nice lesser you got there either way.

Re: Genetics of Granite
The lesser sire you posted looks to have small granite markings, if you look in the alien heads they have small markings and a few in one of them, it could be a reduced granite. And the lesser offspring you posted looks to be a lesser granite to me.
Either way I would repeat that pairing next year and see if you get granites again.

Re: Genetics of Granite
Thanks, I think I'll keep the little 'normal' granite boy, pair him up with a normal girl down the road, and see what pops out.
He does have all the markers, even if the lessers with granite markings do not--but that could just be because they're lessers.
The lessers in that clutch are so dark with the bright yellow, they actually look rather interesting.

Re: Genetics of Granite
you also might want to consider breeding him to a yellowbelly perhpas youll get an ebony

Re: Genetics of Granite
If he proves granite, I may. I don't have any yellowbelly females currently, though, so I doubt I'll have one to use for that next year, lol.

Re: Genetics of Granite
Please look at my lesser x normal clutch, I have the same phenomenon. Babies look like granites
