When is it(gtp) old enough to get sexed?
I remember reading when I initially did my research that a neonate gtp needs to be at least a year to be probed. I'd ask a vet, but as I don't already have a reliable vet in this area, I'd be afraid that they would give me incorrect information to the detriment of my gtp. I bought him in september, and was told he was 6 months old at the time (seemed small but he's my first so who knows), which puts him at over a year. He seems so small still, I'm afraid to take him to a vet, have the vet say probing/popping is fine, and hurt him. Is there a certain age or weight that is the marker for sexing-time, and is popping or probing more safe?

    Thanks!

I've been told it is safe to sex them at a year to a year and a half. My Jayapura is a bit over a year now and as many times as I've sexed reptiles (over 500 times), I am still really hesitant to do so. They are really fragile and if you aren't very experienced, you can risk damaging the animals sexual organs for life. It's worth the wait for me. When she's a bit larger and less fragile, I'll sex her/him.

Probing is safer in chondros, . They have fragile spines, so as you can imagine, bending them backwards is not advised.

probing is the only way to sex chondros. you should wait at least a year and the animal should be over 100 grams.

Dead on answer. I actually prefer more weight on them. If you do not intend to breed or sell I would hold off until you are fully confident it's ready.

The only problem I would have with GTPs is that I will have to wait a year or even more to name it!I don't like giving animals pet names, because that's just plain dumb, you give them a real name, one that people won't laugh at and say "thats so cute". With all my animals, I like knowing if it is a boy or girl, but I like raising them too, so I would have to wait a year just to know the all-important question, boy or girl!

christian, you just call it 'my gtp' for a few months... then name it... have a sexing/naming ceremony.

I mark mine with breeder codes anyways. Even the ones with names.
