Re: beading
The oils and vapors in pine and cedar do some nasty business to the snake.
I don't know the specifics of it, just that it's a no-no.

Pine has something in it toxic to reptiles. I am not sure exactly what it is, Im sure someone else will mention it soon.

Re: beading
Pine and Cedar both have chemicles in it that are toxic to most reptiles. Snakes included.
The oils in these two woods will cause a respatory infection and make your snake sick and eventually kill it. It will show up as a rash around the eyes and nose. Stay away from these two woods.

Re: beading
Pine is a sap tree, and the sap/oil is toxic to reptiles.

Re: beading
I use cypress mulch from Home Depot. One bag will cover my 6'X2' Boa cage and only costs about $2.00 a bag. Just make sure you fog it down with Repel or PAM before hand and change it out completely every three months or so. On smaller enclosures I have used Aspen bails before. They go pretty far, but if you have more than one cage, or something decent sized, the cypress mulch works pretty well.
For most of my snakes I use paper towels or news paper. My display cages get the cypress mulch or aspen.
