African Pygmy mice

I got into these for starter feeders for new monitors. No babies as of yet, but soon

very fast species so don't consider these for anything but feeders or display


As you can see they are tiny. I offer small greens along with a seed mix.

They are too small to push back the ball on a standard water bottle so I offer the gravity feed "trough" waterer

We are at 3 months, so far so good.

They are kept 1.3 in a 10 gallon aquarium and an actual "screen" top must be used. They can easily get through 1/8" mesh.

those are adults, I can't wait to see babies.

I saw some of those at the show in Taylor, MI. They are very very tiny, but cute. I thought about picking them up, but I don't bring in any more rodents, can't risk infection.

okay now those are way cute. But I have to ask, what is the stink factor on those little suckers. are they stinky like regular mice? I can only imagine how tiny the babies are going to be if those are adults. need more pics please. :D

they are kept in my computer room...
only thing kept in there is 2 tanks of gerbils and the Pygmies.

Gerbils are kept on kiln pine and have large food dish of sand and saw dust for bathing. Their cage is changed bi weekly because I feed them 20/80 block and seeds....if the cage doesn't get changed...stuff begins to grow. The pygmies are kept on kiln pine and changed once a month. At the month mark you can put you face in the cage and never think anything occupied it. I can't handle odors....I have a rodent building for that.

The pygmies are only active at night

They huddle in one of the paper tubes and pack both ends full of bedding to cap them off. I change their water every other day. They can not eat large seeds so you must make sure they have millet and small seeds available.

to clean the pygmy cage....I just move the "capped" tube to the side...scoop out most of the bedding by hand...and refill. If you don't disturb their tube.....they won't even come out. After their cage is cleaned...I dump them out of their tube to make sure they all look good...if any babies are present etc.

thanx for the info. they are cute. now if only regular mice weren't stinky i'd have several colonies set up. hubby can't tolerate odors. I am thinking of getting asf's but I hear mixed things about their odor factor too. Looking forward to more pics.

regular mice don't have to be "stinky"..

I run them 1.6

I use a rack set (which allows proper air flow and it keeps their food off the floor)

cleaning...dump the bedding....wipe clean...put a light layer of baking soda so the tub looks like it just got a light dusting of snow...

I then use a light layer of equine fresh bedding. This stuff will become a saw dust consistancy when wet...will bond together and make clean up a breeze (I currently clean 21 racks, 9 aquariums of rodents in less than 2 hours)


I then add kiln dried pine bedding...I would use aspen but the cost is too high compared to the benefit.

Little dab of vanilla in their water bottle helps too but it makes your water bottles nasty...and wouldn't dare to do it on my auto water setup.


ASF's are prolific....meaning they like to breed...but so do mice.

ASF's get bigger than mice...at about 8 months old...where a mouse reaches adulthood at 4-6 months.

I get bigger litters from mice than ASF's


mice get bigger at a younger age than ASF's...and canbe weaned younger.
