Well looking into buying one of these Ranco thermostats and have a question,

Where does the tip (end) of the Ranco go? Inside a tub?

If it were me, I'd put it directly on the heat tape. You'll have to set the heat tape higher to get the tub temp you want but I feel it's safer that way.

Most people place it directly on the heat source (Flexwatt or UTH). Monitor temps at floor level and adjust Ranco appropriately.

Thanks for the comment but I don't think it works like that!

    Of course it does. :)

I know I'm not the first one to do it that way, and I know I won't be the last.

Would it just then be a better option to get a herpstat or helix?

I think they're well worth the additional cost. :)

Flexwatt can get extremely hot if left at full power, so placing the probe directly on the heat tape will keep inside temps from getting too hot. You may have to set it higher than desired temp because the heat has to transfer through plastic and substrate. I measure temps at plastic itself in case the snake decides to burrow under bedding or newspaper. Measure at the hottest place your snake can find itself.
Spending the extra money on a Helix or Herpstat is a good investment IMO.

Then you'd always have to worry about it when you pull that particular tub out, kinda a pain in my opinion. :)
