He/She is Out!

The only remaining baby out of a bad clutch hatched last night! He/she is covered in vermiculite though. What is the next step? I'm going to weigh him/her and I've got the tub set up already.

Grats! I wash them up by placing them in between a paper towel and spraying the towel down with warm water. I let them get the incubation substrate off by squirming around in the towel. After they are all cleaned up, I pop them to determine sex. I then put them in their enclosure. I use a paper towel as substrate, and spray it down. I then spray it every day or two to keep it moist. I then wait for them to shed. Once they shed, I wait a few days and then offer them either a fuzzy / hopper mouse or rat pink.

I don't trust myself to pop. I've never been able to get it right with an older snake and I don't want to injure this little one. Can you probe a hatchling? I don't have any probes but I'm going to be getting a set soon.

How long does it usually take for them to shed?

Congratulations on your new baby. Popping is MUCH easier on hatchlings then it is on older snakes, it really doesn't take much pressure to evert the hemipenes where they are so young. I personally think that popping at this age is safer then probing. I usually pop my hatchlings right after washing them off, then again after they've shed.

When my babies hatch I just rinse them off in the sink to get all the egg goop and substrate off of them, make sure the water is neither too hot or too cold. Then set them up in a shoe box with a paper towel substrate that has been dampened (but not soaking wet) and a water bowl. Then ignore them until they shed to give them a chance to settle down into their new home.

I attempted to pop by putting my left thumb just before the vent. I pulled that scale back a bit and pushed up gently from the tail end. A small nub in the center came up. I'm guessing this is female. It was pale in color and I normally see hemipenes as being bright pink or even red.
