Anyone got some rex baby pics?

I was thinning litters and feeding off some rats this evening when I noticed an oddball in one tub. He's got pretty thin hair, not quite sure yet whether it's kinky since it's still not much more than fuzz. Definitely stands out. I'll pull him for some pictures tomorrow.

Anyone got some pics of rex babies?

I snapped a few pics after I pulled the babies and moms to clean their tub. Turns out I have two of the oddities! One capped male, and a self female. Very strange that something like this is popping up in a colony that has been closed for almost a year. I'm going to keep both and dink with their genes to see what pops out. What do you guys think? Here's the female, and included is the best shot I could get of her whiskers.

The two litters are a little over two weeks old. Dad is a variegated dumbo black/white, and the two moms are a variberk and a hooded both black/white and both het dumbo. Other offspring in the litter are variberks, hoodeds, variegateds, and siamese in black, blue, and fawn I think it's called. Both top ears and dumbos.

She's really cute! Keep us posted on your breeding project - interesting!

We have some Rex Babies, we have 2 rex males we use for breeding, so some come out normal and wirey and then the others come out looking like they have a buzz cut.

I am uploading wedding pictures right now but after I finish I will upload the pictures of our rex babies we just weaned. The mother died so we bottle fed them, so we are more than likely going to be turning most of the litter into breeders.

Looks like a Rex to me. I also had an oddball from one of my litters recently. He has two different colored eyes, and a white "lightning" stripe going throuh one of them (he's a fawn capped). I'm keeping him,calling him "Ivan", and will be breeding him back to mom in hopes of reproducing this trait.

Odd eyes tend to be carriers of the mega-colon. I'd be wary when breeding.

Yep definitely a rex. Very cute! I had a fawn hooded rex come up. So cute!!!

That one is an interesting color! Reminds me of burmese. Hmm...


Anywho, rex is dominant. If neither of the parents have curly whiskers, the offspring are hairless, which is simple recessive and higher maintenance.

The "nakeds" (far too many hairless varieties to know which type), they shed out starting with top of head, down the back & typically the last to go is feet, bum & face.

High maintenance indeed & in many ways-- from easily injured to being temperature sensitive. I worked with a few litters a few years ago & they just don't seem to be a hearty animal. Loved them warm bodies but overall health was just no good. (i.e. lactation, kidney, short lived) I know people who have continued beyond where I jumped off & they have high frequency of CHF, kidney failure & a plethora of other issues that have always been enough to stop any line, yet they proceed <shakes head> All of this is why I don't breed to express anything in the hairless varieties. Rex yes, but not double rex or anything of the "naked" varieties. As a side note I have read about another variety that some people in my area have been working with-- the patchwork lines. Many of these have all been expressing major eye issues.

It's all a real shame, I rather like the naked rats but I morally & ethically do not care to pursue genetics that produce a large percentage of poor offspring. Maybe someone out there will get it right & not fret a culling process.

Enjoy your scruffybutts but please do a fair amount of research before you venture into reproducing them.
