BP keeps trying to escape...help!!!
Hi, I have a secure/proper environment set up for my python, and I've handled him a few times so he's comfortable with me. All the sudden though, he's been feeling out/testing every corner/wall/screen top of his cage...and it's worrying me! I keep wondering why he's suddenly so interested in trying to escape. What could be the deal?:O
Re: BP keeps trying to escape...help!!!
Can ypu post pictures of your BP's cage set up? A snake on the move that is trying to "get out" is a stressed snake. How long have you had him? Rule of thumb is let a new snake settle for 5-7 days with no handling.
Re: BP keeps trying to escape...help!!!
I would imagine he is just checking out his surroundings. Mine did it a fair amount at first when I got him. Just make sure his temps are always right and he is fed properly on a proper schedule, he should be just fine. Now if he's doing it all the time day and night then you might check your husbantry and leave him be for a week or so. Feed him and wait a couple days to handle again.

All mine do that when I first get them, I think they are exploring. They do it at night sometimes. If it's constant, I would think he is stressed, though.

Sorry to get off track, theotherleadingbrand, your baby boy is such a cutie pie!!
Re: BP keeps trying to escape...help!!!
I think that if it is only during the night then that is pretty normal, at least from my experience. Now if it is during the day also, then he may be stressed.
Re: BP keeps trying to escape...help!!!
I ones that do it only at night, some only during the day, but my bumblebee does it day or night. He's not stressed, he just loves to cruise. I have found it to be normal for them to do that. As long as the housing meets the needs of the snake completely I wouldn't worry.
Re: BP keeps trying to escape...help!!!
Your snake may just be checking out the enclosure. When I purchase a new snake, they always are constantly checking around the enclosure. Once they settle in they usually just sleeping during the day time, but not my big King. He is constantly roaming the enclosure everyday while all of my other snakes hide and sleep.
Re: BP keeps trying to escape...help!!!
Snakes that move around much can sometimes lead to symptoms of a stressed snake. More cover or covering all the sides of the tank with opaque matter such as paper may help relieve its stress. My ball python every time after it eats, I catch him wandering around his cage, looking for another meal probably :)
