AC went out! [urgent!]
Alright guys. It is 94* outside today, and my ac in my studio apartment decided to crap out, and I can not get ahold of maintainance at LEAST till tomorrow. The doorman says alot of people are having problems with their ac's and he doesn't know how soon the guy can get to mine. As of right now, it is 85* in here, I'm in shorts and sweatin my butt off. I don't have a fan to turn on. The ac is not blowing air, only making the "hello, I am an AC unit" sound. The temperature in here is only going to go up.
My question is how long this will be okay for my snakes. If it is prolonged, or the temperature is increased, what are the effects? I need ammo to get this fixed as soon as possible!
I have a party to go to at 9, and then physical therapy in the middle of the day tomorrow, but it is far away, I;ll be gone ALL day tomorrow, if I do not cancel.
I am NOT happy. It's been this way for ~4 hours. What can I do??
thank you so much,
Peter

Re: AC went out! [urgent!]
My ac has never went out but I have had a thermostat crap out on me and ovoerheatd some animal plastic cages and killed my 12 foot male green anaconda and it caused neurological damage in my male albino green burmese.

Re: AC went out! [urgent!]
Turn off your heat devices if you haven't already. Make sure your cages aren't in direct sunlight. As long as it doesn't get over 90 as an ambiant temp in your cages for a prolonged period of time, I think your snakes should be fine. They are from west Africa, where temps can soar over 100 for days.

Re: AC went out! [urgent!]
It should be cooler inside than outside, And assuming that you have a thermostat(s) your heat in the enclosures won't operate if it is warmer in your apartment than your temp is set on. You should be OK until they fix your AC.

Re: AC went out! [urgent!]
Your house will never get hot enough to harm your snakes. I might unplug your heat tape, but if you have a good thermostat you probably don't even have to do that. Good luck. I hope it gets fixed quick for you. I lost power for 10 days down here in FL during the hurricanes a few years back and I felt like death would be better than trying to sleep in my house for another night. You might want to try to find a cheap window unit if it's going to take a long time to get fixed. You can find them for under $100. You will be happy you did when trying to sleep.

Re: AC went out! [urgent!]
Agree with everyone. Your house temps should not be dangerous as long as your thermostat is working properly. But I would look into a window unit if you have to endure the heat for too long.

Re: AC went out! [urgent!]
Any of the solutions I have used for warm-blooded animals might get them too cold.
I hope you have turned of all heat mats and lights to keep from making the situation worse.
Do you have anybody who would babysit the snakes at their house, spending a day in travel cages or pillowcases is preferable to overheating.
In the wild they would find a cool place to spend the hottest parts of the day , just being from africa does not mean they can't overheat, Bearded dragons can overheat and they are from Australia

Peter,
I know for a fact that you will be alright for at least 31 days. I say that, because that is how long my entire snake building was without power after Hurricane Katrina. As others have stated, make sure you turn off your heat source, and you will be fine. I actually fed my snakes once a week during out power outage, and even without a thermal gradient, they did just fine. It was in the range of 90-96 degrees here the whole time. I think my room sat at about 86-88 degrees.
Hope that helps ease the worries,

Re: AC went out! [urgent!]
Use ICE, if necessary. Buy some big bags of ice, wrap some ice in plastic and a towel, and place it on the cool side of your bins (heat off of course).

Re: AC went out! [urgent!]
Thanks you all for the advice and helping ease my mind. I'm happy to say that the ac was repaired this afternoon, so I am nice and cool again, and everyone is alright :)
They are all (minus charlie) in a boaphile rack with a herpstat. I was just watching the room temp creep up, and I didn't want it to get too hot for them, especially because I am having trouble getting Chester and Cleo to eat, and I didn't want to stress them out any more.

I'll link a post about that in a few
