unhealthy feeders?

i just purchased some feeder rats from a breeder for the first time.When we went into his house he had a his rats in breeder cages that had not been cleaned for a couple of weeks he admitted.they were also with out water and his house did not have AC so it was at least 100 deg in there.obviously he smelled horrid!!! I also noticed that he was feeding a cheap brand dog food.So with all that my question is can it be possible that these rats are unhealthy to feed?Thanks for your ideas

Not only unhealthy but you have to ask yourself if you personally want to support someone that treats animals that way. Even though they're "only feeders" they should have access to the basic neccesities of life.

I have to agree with luvmy. DO you want to support this person? I wouldn't, and I sure would let them know what I thought about their treatment of the rats.

Will they be unhealthy? They will likely be dehydrated and who knows how often he feeds them. I wouldn't be surprised if they had parasites as well.

I would buy a small sterilite tub and set it up to hold rats. We have stickies in our feeder section, but this way, you can get the rats, feed and hydrate them for a few days, and feed them off or gas to ensure that you give your reptile a healthy meal.
