het pied.. what does this exactly mean?
25% or so chance of her eggs being pied?
someone in my area is selling his het pied female for dirt cheap. it looks normal to me but i'm guessing her offspring could be different?

Het pied means on the outside looks like a normal, but carries the pied gene. So would have to breed her for a chance of getting pieds.

Pied is a recessive trait, meaning that an animal must carry two copies of the pied gene to be a visual piebald. So a het piebald is a normal looking animal that carries one copy of the pied gene. Since that animal only has one copy of the pied gene instead of two it looks visually normal. She would have to be bred to another animal carrying the pied gene to produce any pieds. This means she could be bred to a male het pied for a 25% chance of producing pieds or to a male pied for a 50% chance of producing pieds. Breeding her to a normla would not produce pieds. This is all assuming she is a 100% het for piedbald and not a possible het.

It means the snake is heterozygous (carrying but not expressing) the piebald trait.If she is 100% het and you bred her to a normal, the offspring would be normals 50% het for piebald . If you bred her to a pied you would have a 50% chance of getting a pied, if you bred her to a het pied, you would have a 25% chance of hatching a pied.

I just wanted to point out that the above statement is not necessarily correct. Heterozygous does not mean carrying but not expressing. Literally it means that the animal is only carrying one copy of the allele. Now in referrence to the trait in question (Pied), it is a recessively inhereted gene. Therefore a Het Pied carries one allele, and is not visably different from a Normal. If, however, we were discussing dominantlinhereted traits, the Heterozygous form is different than a normal. 99% of all Spiders in the Ball Python world are Heterozygous, but they surely don't look normal.
I just wanted to clarify for the original poster, as they seem new to this and trying to learn. I didn't want them misunderstanding from the get go.
