From what I've read around here, too much contact will also stress out the snake more, which isn't what you want. It's tough to really say how much handling is too much, as it could depend on the animal.
As it's still small and you just got it, I would give it some time. He'll eventually get used to your daily movements around the tank hopefully. Maybe not though. I've had my ball for over a year now and she's still cautious. She's never tried to bite me like that, but I think it's in their nature to be like that.
Don't give up hope! Eventually they get used to you. Mine likes to explore clothes now, and even ended up in my girlfriend's belt loop one day. :D

I think that is the nature of the beast. Your ball python will get more used to you, but, they are cautious and secretive by nature. Things will get better!
