Isn't this overkill??

I was just surfing random snake sites, and came across this rescue group in Colorado... they had a list of recommended enclosure sizes, and I was quite surprised at their suggestions! http://www.corhs.org/habitat.html

55 gallons minimum for a BP? And an entire room for an iguana? :hmm: My (baby) BPs are in 10/15 gallon tanks, and they seem to be doing fine... when they're bigger, I was planning to upgrade to 20-30 gallons. Isn't that what is usually recommended? Just wanted to make sure I wasn't delusional, LOL.

I have a 55gallon long tank in my garage and I can't see my baby ball python liking that very much... :bolt:

But I agree with them about an iguana having a whole room to itself, especially if its an adult. They need trees and things.

Ya those sizes are way overkill. They have minimum for leopard gecko's are 30 gallon, a gecko would get lost in a 30 heh.

Lol. I have my little ball in a 55 right now. I can't wait to switch to tubs. She eats fine, and is healthy, but she pushes her hides toward the middle. She only likes to use the middle of the aquarium I guess. I wake up in the morning and everything is set in the middle of her tank.

Glad to see I'm not alone in my opinion, LOL. :D I know rescue groups have a tendency to overdo it, but do they really think people will meet those requirements? They said you must provide pictures of your setup, and I doubt many would be willing to get a 125 gallon for their BP. Weird! They do have some nice snakes, though...

Here's a picture of a 125g... my babies would be SOOOO lost in there! :O Even seems too large for a full-grown BP, don't you think?

Well, I think a lot of people think that too big is better then too small and so have a tendency to recommend something too large. However I think the numbers they have listed for 'recommended' sizes are way too big. A room sized enclosure for a boa constrictor? 125 gallon aquarium for a ball python? 75 gallon aquariums for corn and king snakes? The snakes would get lost in something that size. Their 'minimum' sizes are what I would think of as recommended for Adults but they're still far too large for babys and subadults of those species. I don't care what kind of range they are said to have in the wild, we aren't keeping them in the wild. They're captives and we supply all their needs. If snakes don't have to travel to find food and water and shelter, then they don't.

This is where I got my ball python from. The really seemed totally ignorant to the actual facts of how to care for their snakes. The snakes were all in glass tanks with only a single half log hide. And they completely ignored me since I picked up my snake. They never give you a phone number to call just an email address and it took them on average two weeks to get back to me. But like I said Since I've gotten my snake they have stopped responding which is one more reason I'm glad to be apart of a community like this so I'm not listening to bad advise by "experts".

Those guys are idiots! Not only do they recommend sizes of enclosures that are wrong, mostly through ignorance of the actual sizes of the tanks, but they are the pickiest people ever! I thought the idea of a rescue was to find good homes for the animals, not nitpick over every single thing an applicant writes so that no one is 'good enough'.

I applied there for the BTS they have. Their application is the most detailed and demanding I've ever seen AND they make you pay a $10 fee. I filled in everything, showing them that I really knew my stuff about BTS and that I had all the needed equipment to care for one. They wrote back saying they couldn't adopt to 'someone who would breed or resell their animals'! They assumed this just because I honestly answered that I'd sold some of my snakes to a breeder friend! Geez, it's not like I was getting animals all the time only to resell them, or planning a huge breeding operation...but they made their assumptions and naturally wouldn't listen when I tried to explain things.

You mean they charge you a fee just to fill out the paperwork? And then there are guarantees whether or not you'll be accepted and either way they keep the money? Sounds like a scam to me. What kind of 'adoption' fees do they charge if you ARE found acceptable? I'd probably be calling the better business bureau or someone like that.
