very reluctant to say it...yeah I know I know...I used dog food until my mazuri came in
I use dog food on my feeder lab rats
Mazuri for my breeders, ASF's and gerbils.
I was gonna try the hog chow you recommend but since its not really all that good for my lab rats, I am gonna switch to Sand Valley instead. I really don't want too many different feeds just sitting around taking up space.

Re: soon, very soon.
If you have any old phone books laying around they also make excellent nesting material for rats (both ASF and regular sized ones). I always have a stack of old telephone books around so I just rip a few pages into long strips and there you go. The rats, especially the ASF's, seem to love making nests out of this thin paper and it doesn't seem to increase any urine smells since they don't tend to piddle where they nest. The females can mound it over their pinks and it's light enough to cover them without smothering them. Great way to reuse these old books. :)

She popped this morning. I won't disturb her until the pups are a few days old since this is her first litter.

Hey, this is a great idea! I just rescued an old phone book from the recycle bin... I've been putting the empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls in the ASF tanks and they seem to like using it as a hidy hole. I'll add the phonebook and see what they make of it.

Re: soon, very soon.
In my opinion, ASFs really get a bad rap. Gerbils are far more destructive in their constant chewing. My ASfs are protective of their babies right now but the more they have and the more exposure they have to me...they will get accustomed.
I use wood block, old socks, paper towel and toilet paper rolls for chew toys.
