My cheap asf caging

Tank(s) I got from driving through town on bulk trash pick up nights 100 ft in front of the trash truck. Freebie.

2x2's are cut down 2x4's so they are about half a 8 footer so $1.50 per lid for the wood.

1/8" screen wire was $20 for 25 feet, I can make 20 lids from this roll. So $1 for the screen.

food hopper was scrap 1/4" mesh I got from my dad. Freebie.

Walmart wheel $4

Walmart water bottle $2

bedding, standard pine $6/bag. so 10 cents maybe?

Mazuri 6f $24/50lb bag. 5 cents maybe

metal dish I use on occasion for treat seed $2 at Ace Hardware

scrap wood for chewing, toliet paper rolls and wire/staples, all scrap or reused trash or stuff I had laying around = Freebie.

and the hobby doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg


this setup costed under $11 without the asf's.

how sure are you that they cant push that lid up and escape? just curious...

lid weights much more than them. They will need to leverage off of something to achieve the feat. Water bottle would slip and fall and the food hopper sits against the lid. I have used the same lids for years with rats and never one escape ever. 2x2's give nice weight

plus they are a snug fit.

staples hold the screen mesh to the wood frame

wire is used to assemble the food hopper and attach the wheel to the lid.

Looks great! My only suggestion would be to switch to glass water bottles (they look plastic sorry if I'm wrong!). I had plastic ones and they chewed through them...

so far so good. Only chewing I have seen is on the lower spout/cap. Glass bottles won't save me there.

might fab up some metal holder/guards.

We have one male that will chew through any plastic bottle you put in there. He climbs on top and chews the top out. I haven't got around to getting glass ones yet so I put a small hanging one that he can't climb.

I know this is way late...but I had my bottles wrapped in 1/4 " mesh wire and they still chewed holes in them. It took them a while to do it, but as soon as one group did it once then I couldn't put another bottle in there b/c they would have a hole in it the next day.

I use the lix-it brand water bottles they are rounded on the ends, no way for them to chew.
