    Help with a genetics puzzle
    Hi everyone, I am new to the forums here, but recently, my ball pythons have started to near breeding ages, and some may be ready as early as next year if they keep on feed.

    I now have to switch from "awesome pet" mode to "breeding/genetics/probability" mode.

    Here is my collection thus far.


    Males:

    Spider
    Pastel


    Females:

    Orange Ghost
    Pinstripe
    Spider
    Pastel


    Possible Combinations:

    Spider X Pinstripe – Spinner
    Spider X Orange Ghost – Honeybee
    Pastel X Pinstripe – Lemon Blast
    Pastel X Orange Ghost – Pastel Hypo
    Pastel X Spider - Bumblebee
    Pastel X Pastel – Super Pastel
    50% Pastel
    25% Super Pastel
    25% Normal



    Now I've obviously come up with some ideas, but I need major help here on figuring out exact probabilities on these guys.

    I'm having trouble filling in the gaps. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

    You will probably find it easier once you realize that the only thing that matters is whether a snake is homozygous or heterozygous. Well, after that, there is combos, but you don't have any of those yet so it is easy.

    You have mostly heterozygous snakes: the pastels for sure, and we can assume the spiders and the pinstripe also.

    You also have one homozygous snake, the hypo (orange ghost).

    In pairing 2 heterozygous snakes, you'll get 4 different possible outcomes, in equal ratios. The offspring will either have both genes, only the first gene, only the second gene, or neither. If you pair 2 pastels, the "one or the other" possibilities end up being the same, so that is why you get 50% pastel, which is the same as 25% pastel plus another 25% pastel.

    In pairing a heterozygous snake with a homozygous snake, you have only 2 possible outcomes. All snakes will have 1 gene from the homozygous snake, and half of them will have the gene from the heterozygous snake and half of them won't. If, for example, you pair your hypo with the pastel, you'll get 50% pastels het hypo, and 50% het hypos.

    Please understand this is a very quick and simple explanation. I'm in a bit of a hurry! :oops: If it makes no sense to you, ask and I'll try to explain in more detail later.
