They aren't better. They are differently suited.

I think people like them because they are smaller than normal rats, have big litters (usually), not that they are better for the snake. And they come from Africa!! (just kidding) It sounds good. An African rat for an African snake  I'm not sure about the prices, but there are a few ASF owners hiding around here some where.

Are there two threads on this? or am I seeing double? Darn I knew that shot of tequila was going to get me this morning.

We really need only one thread on this. I'll see if I can't get a conversion.

If ASF's grew as fast as regular rats they'd be great..But they grow slow they can't be cycled like regular rats. If it wasn't for that I'd feed them instead of Mice or rats but they are last resort for any of my animals.

I can only speak for myself. But I feel the reasons are:
    Large litters and breeding volume.
Food of Choice in the Wild.
Reduced Smell factors. (Everyone is different).
Size, Not to big or to small.
Something different, Not everyone has them.
    Too darn cute.

An additional advantage is that they seem to use only a corner of the cage to pee and poop so spot cleaning is easier.

Prices here in Florida at reptile shows average between $3.00 and $5.00 each. I have given trios away to other breeders before so if you can find someone close . . .
