    Field Herping ........... in Boston?
In the 5 years I've lived in Boston I have never seen a snake or even thought I would come across one.

This afternoon I was taking the trash out and I found an eastern garter snake basking on the brick path that runs along the back of my apartment. I was so stunned. I dropped the bag of trash and sprinted inside for my camera. When I came back a couple seconds later he was gone:(

I spent a couple minutes digging through the rock pile that he had been next to but I couldn't find him.

Today was the first real nice day we've had up here. Almost 70 and sunny. As the weather warms up I hope I get another chance to see and photograph him.

This made my day, I'm so happy.

some snakes can adapt well to environmental changes (garters, king/milksnakes, racers, copperheads) but others can only deal w/ very little to no change (timber rattlesnakes).

my cousin lives in hopkinton and has found eastern milks, racers & garters on his property.

For a good read about mass. and snakes, check out landscape w/ a reptile.

I finally got some pictures of the little sucker.

He was out basking again a few days ago among the rocks and litter behind my apartment. He was really squirmy and musked me as soon as I picked him up.

I still think it so cool that snakes can adapt to live in an urban environment.

Thats pretty cool! Never know when you'll run into them!
I live in downtown Springfield and there was one in the pool next door. I got him out before the maintenance guys killed it. It was sorta funny watching three grown men freaking out over a snake that was little over a foot long

Oh, I let him go in the woods near "The Big Pond"

    Nice find!
