UTH question

Our tank is on a cabinet tank stand in our bed room, which means underneath (the usual place for the UTH) is open. Will the heat just go down, and not really help the tank? Or is this an instance where the UTH goes inside, under the liner?

You'll want to place a piece of plywood or other solid material under the tank and make sure the tank itself is raised a bit on small 'feet' (like the ones that come with the UTHs). NEVER NEVER place the heat source Inside the tank! For ANY reason! :)
If you can't find or don't have a piece of wood or plastic to fit, you could try taping aluminum foil, shiny side up, under the tank and UTH. But don't forget to place the thermostat probe on the UTH before taping the foil on. :D
