can you mix these meds together

I have a ball python who was active and playful and then i took him to the vet to get checked out and the vet said that he had an absessed mouth. So the vet gave him panacur for deworming and a baytril injection for the absess and then put a silver sulfadiazine cream on the absess and now my ball python is dead. Is this normal?

A LOT more information would be useful if you want us to help try to figure out what happened to the poor little guy. It's not common for a snake to die right after seeing a vet for a minor health issue. But...we don't really know enough to assume that's exactly what happened.

1. What kind of set-up did he live in? (Type, substrate, temps, humidity)

2. How often did you handle him?

3. Was he eating regularly?

4. Did you notice any health issues before taking him to the vet?

5. How long after the vet treatment before the snake died?

6. Did you notice any unusual behavior before the snake died?

7. Have you spoken with the vet to ask for his insight on the matter?

8. Would you consider getting a necropsy done? (An "autopsy" for an animal, performed by a vet)

And any other information you might think is relevant to help figure out what happened. Unfortunately, we may never figure it out. Sometimes the animals die for no discernable reason. But if a specific outside event did cause the death, then a careful look at all the circumstances surrounding it can help find it.

EDIT for PS -- I don't know anything about mixing meds...but if I were wondering about that, I'd look for some known qualified herp vets and call to ask about it. Since you're calling, they don't necessarily have to be local to you.

To answer your question - yes these medications can, and commonly are, mixed together.

I really don't know, but I thought the silver sulfadiazine cream was a topical medication. Since it was put on a mouth abscess, maybe some of it was swallowed and that caused a problem?

While ingesting silvadene is potentially toxic, the OP did not say whether the abscess was in, on or around the mouth.

A snake isn't like a dog - it isn't going to use it's tongue to lick or ingest enough of the ointment to be toxic.

I doubt that a Vet would prescribe silvadene in an area where it could be ingested - but maybe I'm wrong................
