how long does it take to swallow a mouse?
Hello, I have been lurking here for a couple of weeks and I want to say thank you! I have learned so much.

My question is, is how long does it take a snake to swallow a mouse? I put the little guy in the tank with the snake latched the top and left to give it some privacy for about 20 minutes. When I came back the mouse was completly gone. I think there is a little bit of a bulge in his tummy, but I am panicking because I am terrified of mice and the thought of having one loose in my house is creeping me out.

I'm sure your snake ate the mouse. It doesn't take them that long to get them down. Besides if your top was latched it would be pretty difficult for a mouse to get out and your snake NOT to have gotten out! LOL!

If you latched the top, then the mouse has been defeated. It really depends though. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes, sometimes 25. Either way, if there is no mouse in the LOCKED snake cage, then it is for sure not runnig around your house.

If you don't want live mice running around, why don't you switch to Frozen Thawed?

Thank you, I have every intention of switching asap, this is the first time my little guy ate for me we have had him about 4 weeks and the pet store I bought him from (I know Bad) only fed him live mice and also there isn't any where that sells mouse-pops here, I have to order them. so I will order some this week and then I will tackle that venture

you should've just stayed and watched. I thought the same thing when I first fed mine, but after a few times I realized they don't care if I'm in the room or not. so now, I just watch to make sure they kill the prey item. I've read too many posts about people saying not to leave rats in with their snake since they may attack the snake.

You should always supervise when you feed live, you don't want the mouse to attack the snake and hurt it.

Also, any petsmart or petco has frozen mice and rats so unless you live WAY out in the boonies you should have one within driving distance. I find that my snake has a much easier time eating the petco mice since they're packaged differently and thaw out nice and straight. She eats those in about 5 minutes tops. I have seen her take over a 30 minutes for one that she tried to eat tail first and one of the legs was sticking out and she just had to crush the leg in with her mouth finally...
