Snakes and skunks?
This might be a very odd question, but I was wondering if there's any relationship (prey/predator) between snakes and skunks? I'm asking because my dog got sprayed the other day, and I noticed a reaction from Delilah when she smelled it. She's never reacted to my dog before, but he came near her viv smelling like skunk & she tried to strike at him. Then she got snarky with me when I reached in to check the temps, and I'm sure my hands reeked after cleaning the dog. So I was just curious - do they recognize this smell, and would a skunk be prey or predator to them? Hopefully she'll settle down when the smell dies away!

Re: Snakes and skunks?
First off......did you just admit to letting your dog into the house after it was sprayed by a skunk?
The spray that skunks use is to ward off other animals that pose a threat.......I would assume a snake would be too fast for this unless the animal knew it was there........which I'm not sure rats know the snakes I have are there until the last moment.

Don't have much of a choice, since there's nowhere else to put him! ;) We live in a row-house in the city, and he was sprayed on a walk. It wasn't right after he was sprayed, though - I had already given him a good scrubbing & thought the smell was mostly gone. He also doesn't usually get near the vivarium, since it's in my roommate's room, but he followed me in for a second.

Makes sense... the stink is pretty much gone now, so I hope she doesn't smell it anymore!

Re: Snakes and skunks?
Well skunks are omnivores and will eat snakes (as well as pretty much anything else then can snack on) so perhaps the smell triggered something in the snake or it was just a very unusual scent signature that it had never encountered before.

LOL... yeah, she wasn't too happy with me for a few days! I think the smell is finally gone, but I haven't handled her since that happened. Blech. :weirdface
