When do babies typically begin to hatch?
I'd like to time my next expo visit when there will be tons of new hognose neonates available so I'd appreciate a rough estimate of when hoggies begin to hatch in the year!
And if there isn't a general time for this...sorry for the silly question. :gj:
Re: When do babies typically begin to hatch?
I too am hoping one of the shows local to me will have hoggies soon.
I saw them for the first time like a week ago and I have to have one!
Re: When do babies typically begin to hatch?
Hey Dizzy, I'm from WI too, your local shows will have them ... not the IL ones though.

Thanks
What shows do you go to in Wisco? I've only been to allanimalexpo in IL.
Why don't they have them in IL?
Re: When do babies typically begin to hatch?
Western Hognose snakes are a threatened native species of IL, so they can't be sold or purchased in the state.
Dizzy, I sent you a PM

But, if the seller is from out-of-state going to an expo in IL bringing in a western hognose snake... that should be good right? I mean, they would want native Illinoisians to buy them in large numbers hoping that a few of them will escape into the wild and replenish the native species?
Re: When do babies typically begin to hatch?
with proof of captive bred, the vendor at the show should be able to sell western hognoses.

From my understanding if you are in possession of heterodon nasicus in IL and the DNR discovers it, you'll lose the snakes and can be prosecuted. I don't think an IL resident can even buy a hognose snake from Texas and legally bring it back to IL. It is also illegal to ship a western hognose snake to IL from another state. Maybe others can chime in. But whatever the law, it is taken seriously enough to keep Western Hognose snakes from being sold at any IL show I've ever been to. If captive bred hognose snakes were allowed to be sold there, then captive breeders would sell them. I think Easterns are regulated differently.

I'm glad everyone is having a productive conversation but can anyone answer the question of the OP? :gj:
Re: When do babies typically begin to hatch?
I can only speak from experience, but mine warm up in March, lay eggs in May, and I get 1st clutch hatchlings in July. Last season my first ones pipped on July 4th :salute: ... however, as you'll see, other forum members have hatchies already. When I'm shopping for Colubrids, I usually look for well-started hatchlings in mid-summer and on. And if you want neonate hognose snakes, look for well-started ones. Adam
