The tubs themselves are opaque unlike a viv,

Just looking for some info cause i am getting the urge to build.
Racks generally are smaller enclosures than a 20gal. Aquariums like that are also made out of glass and the two hides (or more) are meant to keep the snake from stressing because it feels too exposed. Even if you have covered 3 sides of a glass tank, you should still keep 2 hides because of how the space is set up in the tank.
Racks are generally dark in the back so the snake thinks its in a hide already, but keepers give the snake the option of actually utilizing a hide and from waht i have seen there are a lot of snakes that will take the hide.
Re: number of hides in tubs
In my opinion, if a tub is kept in a rack system it does not require a hide.
Re: number of hides in tubs
my snakes are kept in a custom built snake room the lights only on when im in there and the rubbermaids are also not completely see through they still have a bit of privacy . . . im sure they feel alot less stressed and secure than a glass tank open on all sides with lighting, im not hating on glass as i used them for years just helpin ya out with ur question :)
Re: number of hides in tubs
In my tubs I have hides in some and silk foliage in others. Some snakes will use the hides others wont. Some go under the newspaper and the ones with foiliage the snakes seem happy staying under that. I believe the snakes not only want a dark space but a tight one, so I think they feel more secure when whatever they are hiding in/under is touching them.
Re: number of hides in tubs
Deep snake racks make it so the back side is like a hide in itself and also the tubs are very secure feeling for the animal. Glass does need 2 hides. I have a 20L viv and my snake is almost ALWAYS in one of her hides.
Re: number of hides in tubs
I use CB-70 racks. I provide two hides for my smaller snakes, one for my larger snakes. I generally find my snakes hiding behind the hide in the very back.
The snake wants to feel safe so they need a dark "tight" hole to hide in...

Re: number of hides in tubs
A tub placed in the rack, for all intents and purposes, is surrounded by 3 sides, with the front side being opaque.
So, really, a tub is a hide.

It's funny that you say that. In my tub I have a black hide from reptile basics and one of those half log hides in the other end. Today I've noticed that my snake has been curled up on top of the half log, kind of pressed really snug between the log and the tub lid.
