bedding

right now im useing cocohusk i was wondering if i could buy cypress mulch for home depot and mix the the to together? humidity isn't a problem with the cocohusk but it get dusty would mixing the to together be and beneficial??

Don't see why not but is there a reason you want to do this? I can't imagine you'd save a ton of money doing this or will you? I just buy big bags of reptile aspen at the chain stores personally. $7/bag and they last for awhile.

from what i hear cypress mulch is good at holding humidity too. i like the look of the coconut fiber/cocohusk but it can get messy but my bp's seem to like it cause they can burrow in it. Well reason for adding cypress to is to thicken up the bedding so its not so dusty at times plus i could see it giving the bedding a more realistic bedding cause youll have lose coco and thicker cypress

just want some opinions

Stay away from cypress blends. The stuff at the hardware store is usually blends.

I have used cypress, aspen, and a couple others. I only use newspaper now.

Just be aware a lot of the cheaper bags of cypress mulch are packed very wet so need to be dried out somewhat before they can be used. As well they can be very erratic in their milling process. I've seen bags with huge slivers that I had to pick out by hand (and got slivers in my hands in the process!). Personally I'd love to try double milled cypress but it's impossible for me to find locally. A mix I like for our boas is 1/2 aspen, 1/2 regular milled cypress. You get the benefits of the cypress holding in humidity and providing a tougher bedding for the weight of a heavier snake. The aspen gives loft which you need with belly heat in order to move the heat efficiently to the surface of the substrate. Also looks very nice with the play of the light aspen and the darker cypress. :)

ive used aspen and didn't like it cause it molds. like i said i wanted to you coconut fiber and cypress.. can you get cypress cheap at the pet store or would it be better to get it from a hardware store/garden store??

If your aspen molds, your enclosures are too wet and you're not changing the bedding regularly.

Get the $2 per bag cypress. I've used that kind for a long time and it's never been any sort of "blend". It's only 100% cypress and is fairly small from what I've experienced. I think the brand is No-Float.

What the heck? Why was it molding? It shouldn't mold unless it is soaking wet for a month..

ok where did you get it at?? i have to change out 3 out of 4 cages soon and i got coconut fiber i just wanted to blend it with cypress to get a heavier bedding that also holds humidity for a long time

im a welder and soon ill be going to work and i might be gone up to a week or two at a time
