What kinda of Water Bottles to use?
I think I may have found a local who sell ASFs, and I am thinking about getting some, however I have heard that they like to chew..alot. So I am just wondering what type of water bottle would be best to buy?

My first guess would be glass, if so, does anyone know where I can get them for a good price. But then again, I am unsure if glass water bottles would be the best option.

If your using a glass tank, you can easily fashion a waterbottle holder out of hardware cloth, and hang it on the side so it doesnt matter what bottle you use. I have done that for many of my ASF's bottles, and they worked very well. The only thing to make sure is they cant sit on top. It just annoyed me to clean poo and pee off the top, so I made it as close to the top of the lid as possible. :P

I use a glass tank and made one of the food hoppers to fit my water bottle. Then I took out one column almost to the top for the sipper, I just stick it in and the bottle slides to the bottom. Works wonderfully!!

It depends on how you house them

I use plastic bottles for my rodents (those who do not have watering system) and I use those

So no worry about chewing and those bottles are sping loaded so no leak.

What type of wiring do you use to tie the hardware cloth together? I know of some types of malleable metal wiring that contains lead, which wouldn't be good for the lil boogers.

Cool idea, I'll give that one a try as well. Thanks.

Ah, okay. I completely forgot to ask if I can place them in one of my rodent rack systems, so that works out pretty cool. But for the most part though, I will be housing them in the extra glass tanks I have.

    Thanks yall.

I buy corn cob holders, the ones you use as bird feeders and put the bottles in those. They cannot chew through them and when bored they sit on top of them and try to escape. :D

OR I buy soft soap dispensers from the dollar store, they are quite round near the top and the ASFs just cannot seem to get a good grip on them to chew through. I just switch out the water bottle tops and put them on the dispensers.

But I would take a sample of your water bottle with you and check them before you buy them.

Cool, I like that idea, I actually have some old dispensers somewhere around here, so I'll see if they'll work.

    Thanks Bruce.

I make it all out of hardware cloth. This isn't a water bottle hopper, but exactly how I make all of my hoppers. I used scrap piece for this, so there is an extra seam on the left where I added some more cloth.
