    Worst night ever!
One of my females went into labour around 3 and she still isn't finished!!!!! her babies are deformed and she had one breech. I can't get to a vet due to 5 kids sleeping/ vets in town do not know how to deal with rats/ no way to get to one in the really cold weather( we use buses when my DH is working!) which he works nights!!!!!! poor girl, She's such a sweat heart too hopefully she gives birth to all of them. I'm pulling her from breeding.

2 have lived and hopefully they are defect free as my snake will be hungry in a week. She refused to take care of them so one of my other rats are surragate. The dad was a high white so I think that might have been something to do with it. The last( I think since I can't feel anything) was born today and it was 3x the size of a normal baby! it was dead of a day so it came out with my help. I have raised hamsters and rabbits and had so many births but this is the first time with issues. Hopefully she recovers:please:

If they are for breeding and making babies I would cull the mother and father to prevent this from happening again!

    Sorry to hear.

    So sorry to hear that.

My first group of breeding rats I had one that just was an abysmal breeder, I retired her and she become the best house rat I have ever known.

Best of luck with her, and do not hesitate to pull her. If you do not keep her as a pet then hopefully you can rehome her.

I have had to midwife two litters, and each time very few of the offspring survived.

    Addendum:

As you noted you will feed those babes off. I concur, do not hold them back as breeders. I made that mistake, as I was so fond of this particular rat. Heldback one female, she had a few litters and then died in labour.

Again, good luck. I hope this turns out OK for you.

I pulled the dad already as he was a high white and really nippy. I didn't realise at first the issues with it until I read about it. The female won't be a breeder nor the 2 offspring. That leaves me needing a male as for some odd reason all I have is girls left!I have 4 adult female( all not related)+1 weenling(not related)+2 2 week old hold backs but no male as I was depending on this litter for one.I think one more might be pregnant so hopefull we get a male or eals I'll have to spend the $3 for one.

:(I have to pay 7.50$ for adult rats..... sucks living in middle of nowhere:mad:

I have been having babies born left and right, started with 40 rodents to breed 2 months ago, and now I have easily 150 and have been feeding them off.
