your UTH needs to be regulated by a dimmer, rheostat or Thermostat. it should NEVER get hot enough to cause a fire.
also all UTH pads come with rubber feet to place n your viv so it has a quarter inch gap between it and the surface its on.
Re: another stupid UTH question!
The hottest they get is 115degrees. Thats not hot enough to start a fire. Long term use can discolor wood and plastic. If you use aluminum tape and secure the UTH up tightly to the bottom of the tank you shouldn't have any problems. Most temp controlls for reptiles are expensive. Over $100 dollars for ones that actually work. Big apple herp has some new ones for a little over 30 bucks. Worth the investment.
Re: another stupid UTH question!
When it is 95 degrees outside, do all the wooden houses and trees catch on fire?
You can stick it on the bottom but as jeff said, use the little stoppers so there is some air flow.
