    rherostat and thermostat
i was thinking of using rheostats for night time heat source so the cage doesn't get to hot but i still get the light for viewing

anyone have any advice on what temp and where i should place the probe at. should i go by ambient temp or direct basking spot

i have my thermostats on order so im waiting of them. and im gonna need some help with were to place them too.

right now i get a ambient temp of almost 90 during the day with a out rages hot spot so im alway turning off the basking light on and off through out the day and if i go anywhere i just turn the lights off so it doesn't get to hot while im gone

    any suggestions

definitely control your hot spot so the snake doesn't get burned!!! Also, ditch the heat lamps. It's obvious that they are too high of a wattage, and BPs are nocturnal anyways so they don't need light. Light at night is especially not good: when is your snake supposed to feel like it's dark and comfortable so it can come out and get a drink, cruise, etc? When my snakes come out during the day (which they do on occasion) the ambient lighting in my room is bright enough for me to observe them.

With your temps so high, what are your humidity levels? Be sure you're not drying your snake out.

Also, I would just go to Home Depot and get a rheo ASAP if you are waiting for thermostats to show up. The rheo will cost you $11 and can reduce the wattage going into your heat source, which will help prevent cooking your poor snake in the mean time. The rheo will come in handy elsewhere around the house eventually, so it's not going to be a waste.

home depot employees never know what they are talking about. Check the LIGHTING section. Why would you check in the garden swctionfor a LIGHT dimmer?

I have no idea what you are talking about. home depot sells light dimmers and thermometers, but not thermostats for reptiles.
