    Joaquin Pheonix on David Letterman
    YouTube - Late Show - Where's Joaquin Phoenix? - 2/11/09

There's a huge debate whether he's really drugged up here or if it's all an act. My gut tells me it's an act.

Never quite bought it was an act. He started this waaaay back when he wished BYE! GOOD to Hollywood. Or rather he wrote GOOD BYE! on his knuckles and did not think that when he flippled them around they would be reversed...

If it is an act then it is suicide. I cannot see any studio hiring him again if this is how he promotes his films.

I do think he is looped, and this is his way of actively disrepecting all of what the H-Wood machine stands for. His act of resistance is to play it counter to the game. Thus ensuring his death.

I saw it when it aired and thought Dave handled it really well. You can't blame the guy for flat out making fun of him at that point.

This reminds me of Crispen Glover years ago when he went on Letterman looped out of his mind. I think he just has major problems. I would not set aside the possibility that he has really just lost his mind on Drugs, either for the long term, or just short term "Trip". We saw what happened to his brother River when he fell into drugs. I think it is really sad, I admire him as one of the betters actors in the biz right now, and he still has so much time in front of him... It sucks to see him seem to be so at the end of the rope.

Nobody could have played Johnny Cash better than he did.
