    Platinum x platinum?
    Hi,

I was reading a thread on BEL's and got to wondering how many people have platinums and have bred platinum to platinum? Have they been sold to anyone for long enough for this to have happened?

Mainly wondered what the outcome would be as regards proving the "hidden gene" as recessive/co-dom/dom and on the same allele as the lesser platinum gene complex.

Is that the right way to phrase that question?

If it was on the same allele would the outcome be 50% BEL's and 50% normal looking homozygous hidden gene?

Trying to think about this is really rattling my noggin.

I'm curious about that too! I've been tempted to call RDR and see if I could buy a pair of normals that came from a Platinum to Normal Clutch to see if the "Hidden Gene" could be expressed but I've been told that it doesn't work that way...

    Hi,

Yeah I asked crystal palace reptiles to ask Noah the same question and he told them he doesn't differentiate the normals from a platty momma (in his case) from normal normals - I'm not sure I beleive him on that one.

He always struck me as an astute businessman (from second hand info - I have never spoken to him unfortunately ) and unlikely to just sell them for $9 or whatever when there are people like me who would give their eye-teeth for one. :D

In order to get a platty you need to breed a lesser to a platty sib. A friend of mine asked Ralph for a price on platty sib' last year and I think he told him it would be about 5k or more.

RDR has tons of Platy project breeding results on his website and I'm not sure that anyone else has done much of anything with them yet.

He did lots of Platy X normal breedings and the results seemed to be 50/50 lesser and normal looking (aka platy sib or hidden gene carrier). There have been no reports of any of the lesser X lesser ever producing platy. But he also did many hidden gene carrier x hidden gene carrier and didn't report any non normal looking offspring there either. However, when you cross a hidden gene carrier to any lesser it looks like you can produce Platy at about 1/4 (same for hidden gene carrier to unrelated buttter).

All of this seems to confirm the hidden gene to be yet another allele of the white snake complex. The really odd thing about this one is that it's the most normal looking of them all and even odder yet doesn't appear to show even when homozygous.

RDR did report a platy X platy breeding (2007?) with a normal looking baby which should be a known homozygous hidden. The other 3/4 chance for such a breeding are made up of 1/2 for Platy and 1/4 for homozygous lesser (BEL).

When a homozygous hidden (normal looking) is bred to a homozygous lesser (BEL) the results should be 100% platy.
