humidity & CHE

Hokay so I just got my bp tonight! He seems to be doing just fine so far, loves the hide I got for him on the cool side.

Anyway, I didn't read the FQA about CHE sucking up humidity until after I got it. >.> Pretty sure I need the emiter or the tank will get too cold, and won't have a basking spot. But the humidity stays at about 40-48% unless I've just misted. Promptly after a mist, humidity rises to about 60%. I have a cardbard cover over a good portion of the tank, and the water dish is right next to an under tank emiter (which is actually on the side of the tank), and the dish is right below the CHE.

That's all the tips I've seen so far to keep up the humitiy... but its staying at a not-good-enough 40ish %. Anyone have any ideas for me?

Before we give him a hard time, let's first welcome him... :welcome:

i use cypress mulch and i put the water dish right under the che. it keeps my humidity at 50%-60% all the time. around shed time i have one of those wood logs(for decoration) that i soak in water so the humidity rises to about 70%. by the time they are done with the shed the log is dry and the humidity is back down to 50%-60%. hope this helps.

ok... cardboard is going to suck humidity... find something that doesn't absorb moisture.

And CHEs are humidity killers. You can achieve the same temps and better temps with a UTH.

Basking spot is misnomer, they do not bask. It infers that they need heat from above.

Give them heat from below and you will be fine.

You're right, I didn't do a search, but I did check a handful of FAQ's and stickies before I made this. Next time I have a question, I'll search some keywords first, though. :)

humidity in the 40s is much better than some BPs in big box pet stores have. Luckily it shouldn't take much work to get it up that extra 10% :D

40-45% all the time will most likely result in bad sheds, so it is pretty important to get it up in the 50%s most of the time, with a little boost when the snake is getting closer to shedding.

I put a good many hours getting my tank's humidity right, since I have an ambient humidity of about 5-15% most days here in MN in the winter.

Someone above mentioned the cardboard sucking out humidity. Switch that out for foil or plastic wrap to cover part of the screen top, along with a wide water bowl, and you might just get it up into the 50s. If that fails, sphagnum moss/peat moss can be added to the tank, just mist it daily. I get it in brick form from a local pet store.

Let us know if you still have problems after trying some things!

i'd say get rid of the tank and go to an enclosure i never had a problem with humidity actually my humidity is prolly too high almost 80% at night but the coconut fiber is still moist but it should drop down to 60% day and 70% at night and maybe that still to high

if his house is cold like mine the uth will not be enough to keep ambients up. i have a che on both my tanks and have no humidity issues, but i have the che right on top of the big water dish and use cypress mulch. by the way make sure your tank is coverd on both sides and back with insulation. should help so you dont have to have the che on high(i use a dimmer).
