    paint or stain ??
ok well im about to make my lil bp a new custom cage and came across the question of what to seal the inside with ... i was thinking that i would use a stain cuz it would look nicer but wondering if it would have any ill effects on my BP ... also would a darker colour make my snake feel more secure then a lighter colour ??

I think darker is definitely better. Minwax makes a stain/polyurethane combo called PolyShades. I was thinking of building a cage and researched it and found out that it is non-toxic when dry and cured. Here's a link: http://www.minwax.com/products/one_s...olyshades.html

DON'T USE MINWAX POLY SHADES, All in one stains are garbage.

buy minwax stain then buy polyurethane and do sanding between coats to keep even layers. stain will be better sealant over years than paint.

I've used the all in one and it never turns out properly. best to do stain step, and poly step.

I actually used a latex based in/outdoor paint by Rust Oleum on my cage system and rack that is totally water resistant and dries without any odor. Of course, as with any paint or stain, you have to let it cure at least 48 hours. :)

The cages insides are covered with Contact Paper over the painted wood for added resistance and better looks...but everything is great so far. :)

I respectfully disagree. I've used it on pieces of furniture and they turned out beautiful.

The easiest thing I have seen (a little off topic granted, and I apologize) is putting clear silicone around the edges, then using adhesive contact paper. Seems pretty easy sense the only dry time is 24 (what I do anyways, might be less) hours for the silicone. I'd probably out gas the glue on the paper just to be safe though.
